As of this week, iPadOS 13.4 is with the new Mouse and trackpad support available. We explain how to use input devices with the tablet.

In principle, it is already possible to connect a perfectly normal Bluetooth mouse to your iPad. The prerequisite is, of course, that iPadOS 13.4 is already running on the device. You can then navigate through the system and the new cursor will also “stick” to elements over which they are moved. However, the available gestures cannot be used. For that you either need one Magic Mouse * or a Magic trackpad * from Apple or a cover with a trackpad, such as Logitech for the iPad Air 3 offering.

iPadOS 13.4: How to set up an input device

  1. The first thing to do is make sure your mouse or trackpad isn't connected to any other device. You can check this in macOS by opening the "Bluetooth" item in the system settings and removing a device using the X icon to the right if necessary. In Windows sees the whole Prozess almost similarly, here you have to click on a device in the Bluetooth settings for the remove option to appear.

  2. If you don't have a peripheral device from Apple yourself, you may have to put the mouse or trackpad into pairing mode. Usually there is a button for this that you have to press for a few seconds. It is best to read the operating instructions for your own device for this step.
  3. Now we have to pick up the iPad and open the Bluetooth settings. If the previous steps worked, the device will appear at the end of the list. This must now be selected.

  4. If the connection worked, you can start using it. When using a trackpad, there are also gestures, such as scrolling with two fingers or switching from open apps by swiping three fingers to the right or left.
  5. If you have connected a trackpad or a mouse, a new entry "Trackpad & Mouse" will now appear in "General" of the iPad settings. There you can set things like the pointer speed or the click behavior
