The first top smartphones for 2024, the Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+, are here. We'll clarify what these entail here.

Two highlights of the new Samsung Galaxy S24 and 24+ are Galaxy AI and improved Nightography. Galaxy AI includes the new “Live Translate” function, which enables real-time communication in another language, and “Circle to Search”. This allows you to circle things on the display and then search the Internet.

Artificial intelligence is also used in nightography. Here it helps with zooming and various assistance functions to achieve even better shots. The S24 and S24+ also allow you to record videos with 8K resolution at night.

Specifications: Again with ExynosProprocessor

With last year's S models, Samsung used the Processor on a slightly customized Snapdragon 8 Gen2 from Qualcomm. This year, however, an in-house chip is being used again, more precisely the Exynos 2400, which was manufactured using a four-nanometer process. One feature of this is “AI-powered performance”, which, among other things, ensures that games run more smoothly.

Apropos Gaming: Both smartphones offer around 57 Pro100% better hardware-based ray tracing for even better graphics. On top of that, the cooling system has been improved.

Depending on the configuration, the memory holds 128 gigabytes or 256 gigabytes in the S24 and 256 gigabytes or 512 gigabytes in the S24+. The RAM size is eight gigabytes in the S24 and 12 gigabytes in the S24+. The 4.000 milliampere-hour battery in the S24 ensures sufficient power, while the battery in the larger model has 4900 milliampere-hours.

The operating system is Android 14.0 with One UI 6.1 installed. Samsung promises that the two devices will receive software updates for seven years. Google last announced at the launch of Pixel 8 (Pro) makes a similar promise.

Camera

The Samsung Galaxy S24 and Galaxy S24+ both have a triple camera again. This consists of a wide-angle lens with 50 megapixels, a telephoto lens with 10 megapixels and an ultra-wide-angle lens with 12 megapixels.

As is typical for Samsung, there are several software functions on board that are intended to make photos and videos look better. In addition to the above-mentioned innovations for night photography, Samsung integrated a new AI-powered editing mode. This analyzes images and then suggests removing a disturbing reflection. If that's not enough, you can use “Re-Composition” to redesign the background of photos.

Design and display

Samsung adapted the appearance of the smartphones to that of the previous generation. This means that the display takes up the entire front and has a hole for the front camera. The back is bare except for the three camera lenses arranged in a row. One difference, however, is that the sides are no longer as rounded.

The display of the regular model is 6,2 inches and that of the Plus version measures 6,7 inches diagonally. Resolutions are FHD+ for the S24 and QHD+ for the S24+, while both devices share the maximum brightness of 2.600 nits.

Samsung Galaxy S24 and S24+: prices and availability

Pre-orders for the two devices are open now and they will be available in stores from January 31st. The starting price of the Galaxy S24 with 128 gigabytes of storage and eight gigabytes of RAM is 899 euros, while the Plus device with 256 gigabytes and 12 gigabytes of RAM is available from 1.149 euros.
