With Airplay 2 it is now possible to group the company's loudspeakers via the control center in iOS. It also works to pair an Apple HomePod and a Sonos speaker, as both are compatible with Airplay 2.
In addition, there should be fewer dropouts in playback with Airplay 2. This is achieved because the standard uses a larger cache to pre-store the required data. It follows that the buffer for playback increases.
In addition, thanks to the standard, the music can be remotely controlled via Siri.
Supported speakers
Unfortunately, only the latest Sonos speakers will support Airplay 2. These include the Sonos Beam, Sonos One, Sonos Playbase and Sonos Play: 5 of the second generation. Older speakers don't get Airplay 2 or Airplay 1.
However, it is possible to pair a supported speaker with an older one. You have to do this in the Sonos app, then music can be placed on the supported speaker via the control center and Airplay 2, which then forwards it to the second speaker.
After the update, the supported devices are displayed in the iOS control center. The way to the Sonos app is no longer absolutely necessary if you want to play music. If you don't get the update right away, it is advisable to just wait and see.
