Android 8.0 Oreo is official: all of this is known

(Post picture: © 2017 YouTube / Google)

Today Google finally announced the new name of Android 8.0. It's called Oreo and not Oatmeal Cookie or something like that, but all the suggestions and rumors were definitely pretty creative. Among other things, there were still the names Octopus or Orangina to choose from.

This time around, Google really set the mood. In addition to a specially set up page, there was also a small live stream. In this the new Android Oreo statue was unveiled. Otherwise there are other little gimmicks to be seen on the page. Nobody knows why all the effort.

Android O: the innovations at a glance

The innovations of the Nougat successor have been known for a long time. Google didn't mention anything else in the livestream. This is all new:

  • Notifications: Developers can now group notifications for an app. The user can thus decide individually how he would like to receive which notification from an app.
  • Snooze: With this practical function, you can now finally be reminded of notifications. You can choose between 15, 30, 60 or 180 minutes.
  • Picture-in-picture: This mode allows the user to continue watching YouTube videos while using other apps. The video can also be moved around on the display.
  • Notification Dots: Makes a small dot appear directly on the app icon when you receive a notification in it. A number is not displayed because - according to Google - "you don't want to stress the user".
  • Adaptive Icons: This innovation is also useful for developers. This allows you to design each icon of an app individually, whether round or classic. The user should also be able to adjust this himself. In addition, there should be animations for the icons.
  • Shortcuts: Google is also introducing the “3D Touch” familiar from Apple with Android 8.0. With a longer tap on an app, you can display shortcuts from an app. You can open a chat directly in WhatsApp.
  • Emojis revised: Google is finally revising the emojis with the latest version of Android. So the pudding-shaped emojis, the so-called "blobs", are now history. This means that there should be fewer misunderstandings with other emojis, for example from WhatsApp.
  • Settings: The layout of the settings has also been given a new coat of paint. Practical features such as the automatic activation of WLAN within range is just one of the innovations. There was a complete redesign in the memory and battery area.

It will take a few more months for all popular smartphones to receive the update. The devices from Google will be the first to receive the update in a few days. These include the Nexus 5X, the Nexus 6P, the Pixel C, the Nexus Player and the Pixel smartphones Pixel and Pixel XL.
