Android 9.0 Pie is here: What's new in Google's operating system
Today, by the way, Google officially introduced Android 9.0 Pie. The successor to Android Oreo is to rely specifically on artificial intelligence and suggestions to improve the user experience even further. Android 9 is now available as an update on Pixel smartphones. Which devices get the update and what's new - here.
Last year there was a presentation of Android 8.0 Oreo your own event. This time you have one by the way Entry in the Google Blog released. When choosing a name, this year the focus is on pie, a cake. But it could also have meant a slice of pizza. We briefly summarize what is new and which devices will receive the update first.

Android 9.0 Pie: These are the new features
The automatic brightness becomes intelligent
One of the biggest innovations of Android Pie is the first-time implementation of artificial intelligence directly in the system. Other manufacturers such as Huawei use for example with the Kirin 970-Chip one of your own Proprocessor with AI. But now all smartphones with Android 9 can enjoy artificial intelligence. With the help of Deep Learning, the system remembers over time which apps the user uses most and preloads or closes them accordingly. This should increase the battery life significantly.
This implementation has also made significant improvements to the automatic brightness. In future, the system should know which brightness should be set for which app and at what time. Thus, in addition to ambient light, other factors are also taken into account. Google calls this function "Adaptive Brightness" - the brightness can of course still be changed manually. As a result, the system remembers new behavior patterns.
App suggestions
With Android 9, you will hopefully bring sensible app suggestions to your smartphone. So far, you have only received very seldom, and if so, rather unnecessary suggestions for apps. The new app suggestions are also adapted to user behavior. If you plug your headphones into your smartphone after work in the car or on the bus, you get the suggestion to continue listening to your Spotify playlist. If you prefer to listen to audio books instead of music, you will find a button to start Google Books directly on your app drawer.
In addition, there are small overlays from other apps with "Slices" if you use the Google search. If you type in "Uber", for example, you will receive suggestions for a trip home directly from the app - with the fare and duration of the trip.
Save the battery with AI
Google has been making heavy use of AI lately. Now you want to extend the time between the individual loading times. For this purpose, the user's routines are analyzed in detail, for example to determine the backgroundprocess can be reduced during the user's bedtime. In addition, the use of individual apps is also closely monitored, so here too Proprocesses can be better managed by the system.
Look and feel of Android 9.0 Pie
Space for the notch
One definitely cannot deny a trend from 2018: Almost every smartphone gets a notch. That's why Google has split the status bar elements in Android 9.0 Pie so that there is space for a notch in the middle. This change also suggests that the Google Pixel 3 and the Google Pixel 3 XL could have a notch.
Everything becomes round and colorful
A swipe down from the status bar and bang: You can see the revised notification center. It is noticeable here that all the icons for the quick settings are now round. That looks very tidy. Of course, as always, you can expand the list with the Quick Tiles with one swipe. New messages are now displayed in a "block" with rounded corners and delicate lines to the border between individual notifications. If you open the settings, you can see here that pretty much everything that was possible was rounded off. In addition, all icons for the individual setting items now have a different color.
The redesigned launcher
At first glance, not much has changed with the Pixel Launcher. But appearances are deceptive. If you start the multitasking menu, you will notice that a dock with frequently used apps is displayed at the bottom of the screen. In addition, you can now navigate horizontally through the recently opened apps. If you open the app drawer, you will notice that the dock is now being displayed in the upper part of your screen.
Gesture control - almost like the iPhone X.
Did you notice the new button in the middle of the navigation bar? This can now be used to navigate through the OS using gestures. A swipe up is enough to open the recently opened apps. You can now move through this using the new button by dragging it to the right or left. You can switch to the last used app just as quickly: simply drag the buttons quickly to the right or left. That's it. A simple tap on the new icon takes you to the homescreen, a short hold starts the Google Assistant.
Minor innovations
Digital wellbeing
Let's be honest: we all spend too much time with our smartphones. "Digital wellbeing" wants to make this clear to you and help you to use your daily driver less. You can now set app timers that prompt you to close a selected app after a certain period of time. Do not disturb mode also visually suppresses notifications. The "relaxation mode" recognizes when it gets dark, activates the do not disturb mode and switches on a blue light filter. In addition, the display only outputs images in grayscale when the previously set bedtime is reached.
Which devices are supported?
Of course, the devices from Google have the right of way again. But also Essential is already distributing Android 9.0 Pie to users of a PH-1. Presumably, companies like OnePlus will also quickly follow suit, since you can use the OnePlus 6 could already test the beta of Pie. There is a detailed list here.
Then I will soon pull the new Android on my OnePlus 3, since you Samsung users can wait a long time 😉
AI, AI, here and there. Yes, but when will it finally be mature? I hope that something is finally happening with the AIs. All voice assistants on the market are somehow still stupid.
It's all still developing - in a few years we'll be amazed at how well AI will work. It remains exciting, even if you don't know exactly what to expect ...
Hi Gerd,
interesting opinion. Sure, the voice assistants could really be a little more sophisticated all together. However, I find that Google has implemented AI well on things like the Adaptive Brightness feature.
