Second generation Apple CarPlay: Porsche and Aston Martin show concepts
At WWDC 2022 Apple showed a new version of CarPlay. Porsche and Aston Martin this week unveiled concepts of how this will be used in their vehicles.
The new version of CarPlay will run on all screens in a vehicle and will also be deeply rooted in it. Manufacturers can adapt the user experience in a way that makes sense for the respective arrangement of the advertisements. The rooting should, for example, also allow you to see the current speed alongside Apple Maps on the driver information display or influence the temperature in the interior. At that time, Apple promised that the first concrete announcements from car manufacturers would follow by the end of this year.
New CarPlay: Porsche and Aston Martin have their say
Now it's December and just before the end of the year, two manufacturers presented how the new CarPlay will work in their cars.
The first is Aston Martin. We should see several models of this with the more modern CarPlay version next year, including an updated DB12. The graphics provided show what the new CarPlay looks like on the driver information display and the infotainment display. Very interesting so far, but not nearly as spectacular as it looked in Apple's short preview.
The second manufacturer is Porsche. As things stand today, it is still unknown when the first models will appear here. In the example images you can not only see how CarPlay takes up the driver information display and the infotainment display, but also the screen for the front passenger. Widgets for the calendar and music playback are placed there. This is a lot closer to what Apple demonstrated.
We don't know when other manufacturers will follow suit. It is also unknown whether everyone else who originally wanted to integrate the new CarPlay will continue to do so.
