On Tuesday there were still rumors, today Apple Pay was officially launched in Austria. You can now pay with your iPhone or Apple Watch in Austrian shops.

Already yesterday we reported about the upcoming launch of Apple Pay on Wednesday in Austria. An insider had probably chatted away and was right with the thesis. Apple's payment service has been available in Austria since this morning. Some banks will be there at the start - more are to follow later this year.

Apple Pay in Austria: These requirements are there

However, not everyone can start paying. If you want to pay with your iPhone or Apple Watch on the go, you need at least an iPhone 6. Since this generation Apple has been installing NFC chips in smartphones. It looks different with the Apple Watch - all models are supported here. Both the first and the current generation of the smartwatch have an NFC chip.

Theoretically, you can also use the iPad to pay in shops. Thus, Apple Pay is supported from the iPad Air 2 and the iPad mini 3. If you want to pay via Mac in Austrian online shops that have Apple Pay integrated, this is also possible. You need at least a MacBook for this Pro or MacBook Air with Touch ID. If your own MacBook does not have Touch ID, you can also use Apple Pay with all MacBooks in combination with a supported iPhone.

Apple Pay: These banks are supported at the start

Not many Austrian banks are currently supported. Incidentally, it does not work as an Austrian user to have an account with a foreign bank. According to the information from Apple, Apple Pay is currently only supported by Erste Bank und Sparkasse and the online bank N26. Boon also supports Apple Pay, but is not directly a bank - there would be a total of three providers to start with.

Other banks and Provider wants to get on board in the course of the year. Larger banks such as Raiffeisenbank, Ing-Diba, Oberbank and Volksbank have not yet published any information on availability.

Apple Pay in Austria: These merchants support payment

To be able to pay with Apple Pay, however, you need a credit card. If this requirement is met, you can use Apple Pay to pay at any merchant in Austria that supports contactless payment with a credit card. If you have been able to do this in your favorite shop around the corner for a long time, you can in future also do this with the iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch.

Over time, some online shops in Austria will also support payments with Apple Pay. Then it is also possible to pay with the Mac. However, not many shops are currently supported. The processing of payments through Apple Pay will also be used in apps in the future.

Apple Pay in Austria: Here's how you can get started

With Apple Pay, a PIN code is no longer required for payment, authentication is via Face ID or Touch ID. In addition, the merchant no longer receives a card number, but only a generated "token" - a unique character string that applies once to this payment. Before you can pay in stores with Apple Pay, you have to add your card. We explain how this works for each individual device.

Set up Apple Pay on the iPhone

To add Apple Pay to your iPhone, you have to switch to the "Wallet" app. There is now a plus symbol at the top right, which you can use to create a new card. There you can now add your new credit card to the respective bank. After you have entered all the data, the card or payment with Apple Pay may still have to be verified. You will receive an extra request from your bank - further information can be found in the app.

Set up Apple Pay on the iPad

This works almost identically on the iPad, except that you first have to switch to the settings and then to "Wallet & Apple Pay". Here you then click on "Add card". Here you will be guided through the next steps.

Set up Apple Pay on your Apple Watch

To set up Apple Pay on the Apple Watch, switch to the watch app, select "My watch" and then select "Wallet & Apple Pay". Here you also follow the steps in the app again.

If you want to pay in a store of your choice, you press the side button twice on an iPhone with Face ID. Then you have to unlock your iPhone using Face ID and hold the iPhone up to the card reader. If everything worked, you should see “Done” on the display and the payment has been processed.

This works almost the same way on an iPhone with Touch ID. You just have to unlock your iPhone as normal by clicking the home button and then hold the device to the terminal in the shop. If everything has worked, this is confirmed by the message "Done" on the display.
