Huawei has just introduced its two new flagship smartphones, the Huawei P40 and P40 Pro. As in previous years, the cameras in particular are expected to impress. Due to US sanctions, Huawei's new flagship smartphones now come without Google services.

At first glance, there are no major changes compared to the two previous models. The front is still almost borderless, even if a punchhole has been installed instead of a notch. The back is made of glass, as it has been for years. What is striking, however, is the new, significantly larger camera element.

P40 models with a large display cutout

Compared to the two predecessors, the displays have become a little bit larger. The Huawei P40 now comes with a 6,1-inch display and the P40 Pro even has a 6,58-inch display. Neither display supports 120Hz. However, the P40 Pro at least has a 90Hz panel.

What is striking is the new punch hole on the top left edge of the display, which is comparatively large. The reason for this is that Huawei has installed an IR blaster in the P40 Pro in addition to the 32 megapixel front camera.

Technical data at a glance

In terms of hardware, Huawei only uses the best in its new flagship smartphones. The processor used is the Kirin 990 5G, manufactured using a seven nanometer process. The RAM is 8 GB and the internal memory can be chosen between 128 and 256 GB. The memory can also be expanded using Huawei's own nano memory card. The battery is 40mAh in the P3800 and 40mAh in the P4300 Pro. The P40 Pro can be charged with a cable with 40 watts and wirelessly with 27 watts. The P40, on the other hand, can be charged with a maximum of 22,5 watts even with a cable.

The camera should convince again

The cameras in Huawei smartphones have been really impressive in recent years. The camera in the P40 and P40 Pro should also be able to take great photos again.

Huawei has therefore installed four lenses in the P40 Pro. In addition to a 50 megapixel main sensor, a 40 megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and a 12 megapixel telephoto lens, Huawei has also installed a time of flight sensor. The Huawei P40 only uses a triple camera. In addition to the same 50 megapixel main sensor as in the P40 Pro, Huawei has used a 40 megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and an 16 megapixel telephoto lens in the P8.

The large number of lenses means that the P40 can also cover a wide range of zoom levels. With the P40, you can achieve up to 30x zoom with the super-sensing zoom, and with the P40 Pro even up to 50x zoom. A variety of software mechanisms are designed to make the image quality of the P40 series "perfect" in every situation. Another new feature is the "AI Best Moment" function. This means that photos are always taken at the perfect moment. The camera takes several pictures and suggests three different pictures at the end. Thanks to AI, reflections or unwanted passers-by will also be removed from images in the future.

Play Store is missing from new Huawei flagships

The P40 series also uses Android 10 as the operating system, along with Huawei's own EMUI 10 interface. However, Google services and therefore the Play Store are not installed on the P40 and P40 Pro. The reason for this is the US sanctions. Since last year, American companies have no longer been allowed to work with Chinese companies. As a result, Google cannot certify new Huawei smartphones.

Instead of Google services and the Play Store, Huawei is now using its own app gallery and Huawei mobile services for the P40 series. In the future, apps like Instagram, WhatsApp and Co. should be installed using the Huawei App Search. The app search then leads you to websites where you can download the APK file of the respective app.
