Many smartphones nowadays offer an always-on display. Google wants to improve this on pixel smartphones with palm recognition.

The always-on display has the advantage that notifications and the time can be viewed quickly without activating the device. Often this switches itself on when the phone is lifted. Many Pixel users have that though Proproblem that the screen activates when the always-on display is activated and you hold the smartphone in your hand. A major downside is that you lose a little battery each time. One buyer suggested reducing the touch area that fully activates the smartphone display. A Google employee replied that such a feature will come in later versions. However, the how and when was left open.
