Polestar has introduced the third generation of its all-electric fleet, the new Polestar 3. Like its predecessors, it is equipped with plenty of technology, but is now making a bigger leap and is also intended to provide the basis for autonomous driving at Polestar.

More performance, more range and more safety. The third Polestar can be summarized with these three points. Big plans have also been made: Polestar wants to launch a new car every year by 2024. The Polestar 2023 will be launched in the fourth quarter of 3.

Big battery, big speed

Polestar 3 Performance

Buckle up, please: Polestar 3 with even more performance. (Image: Polestar)

With the new battery capacity of 111 kWh, the Polestar 3 should have a range of up to 610 kilometers according to WLTP. The current Polestar 2 achieves WLTP ranges of between 445 and 551 kilometers, depending on equipment and engine. For comparison: The Polestar 2 comes with a total capacity of 78 kWh, which means that the new model will be much more durable. This should go from 30 to 10 within 80 minutes Procent can be charged. In addition, the new SUV should also offer the option of bidirectional charging.

The new Polestar 3 will also push its owners back into their seats: the performance of the long-range model (dual motor) with the performance package is said to be 380 kW and 517 hp. This allows the driver to go from 0 to 100 km/h in a brisk 4,7 seconds. But we already know this number from the Polestar 2, which comes with less horsepower and a lower weight at the same time.

Long range, higher range

Far beyond: The Polestar 3 with even more horsepower, a larger battery and longer range. (Image: Polestar)

At the start there will only be the Long Range model. Both have two motors, which differ somewhat in a few points. The performance model should only achieve a range of 560 km, while the basic variant should be up to 610 kilometers (according to WLTP). Both models are driven on all four edges. The torque here is 840 Nm or 910 Nm for the performance model. As with the predecessors, the maximum speed is 210 km/h.

The towing capacity has increased significantly to 2.200 kg compared to the Polestar 2 with 1.500 kg. The Polestar 3 has also grown: 4,9 meters long, 1,6 meters high and 2,1 meters wide (including mirrors). The Polestar 2 still had dimensions of 4,6 x 1,4 x 1,9 meters.

Pilot and Plus package now standard equipment

Premium equipment is now standard and brings the glass roof for everyone. (Image: Polestar)

With the predecessors, the pilot and plus package had to be booked separately. Otherwise, the Pilot Assist, the brake support and other smart assistance systems were missing. Buyers without the plus package had to forego the advantages of the glass roof, steering wheel and rear seat heating and a few other advantages. That's over now: In the Polestar 3, Premium is part of the standard equipment. The pilot package as well as the plus package are included.

Only a fully electric trailer hitch and 1,3 megapixel HD LED headlights now require an extra purchase. The new pilot package with LiDAR, which should be available to order from Q2/2023, will also cost extra. With Luminar's LiDAR system, the car always has an eye on its surroundings. This means that the sensors of the Polestar 3 should continue to function perfectly even in bad weather conditions and be able to intervene at all times.

More interior comfort with nappa leather and ventilated massage seats

The interior is also more refined: the buyer now has the option of ordering leather seats with nappa leather and massage seats with ventilation. In the middle, the large operating display with Android Automotive OS now stands out more, which at the same time has become significantly larger at 14,5 inches. The control lever finally moves from the middle to the steering wheel, which creates space for a lockable center console. Instead of a Harman Kardon sound system, "Bowers & Wilkins for Polestar" with 25 loudspeakers is now used.

The well-known head-up display and the interior lighting are also on board here.

Smarter and more efficient exterior

The door handles now also close flush with the doors and also make the exterior look much higher quality. Great importance was also attached to aerodynamics in the Polestar 3: Technical design elements are integrated into the exterior, which offer better air flow and thus increase efficiency. With the "Aero Blades" on the back, the SUV whirls up the air on purpose so that the airflow can be directed again proeasily detaches from the side of the vehicle.

Furthermore, the exterior mirrors are frameless and offer a wide-angle view from the side, which reduces the blind spot.

Typically Volvo: safety first

Polestar 3 SmartZone sensors

There are even more sensors as standard: five radar modules, five external cameras and twelve external ultrasonic sensors. (Image: Polestar)

With all of its sensors and systems, which now includes NVIDIA's new drive-core computer, Polestar also claims to be ready for autonomous driving. A new feature is the new "Smart Eye" with eye tracking, which uses two cameras to keep an eye on the driver. This should be able to trigger a warning tone and even emergency braking if you are tired or asleep in order to prevent accidents caused by microsleep. The sensors have now grown to a total of five radar modules, five external cameras and twelve external ultrasonic sensors.

The rest of the safety systems remain the same and are also present on the Polestar 3: Collision Warning at Night, Lane Keeping Aid (Lane Departure Warning), Lane Departure Warning (Warning when leaving the lane), Run-off Road Mitigation (Lane Keeping System), Oncoming Lane Mitigation (oncoming traffic). -Collision avoidance), Driver Alert Control (driver warning system), Rear Collision Warning and Mitigation (rear collision warning and mitigation), Cross Traffic Alert with brake support Road Sign Information (RSI; traffic sign recognition), Intelligent Speed Assist, Blind Spot Information (BLIS; blind spot -Warning system with steering assistant) and Post-Impact Braking (automatic braking after a collision).

The Polestar 3 comes at a price

If you compare the Polestar 2 with the new successor, this was a real bargain. While this started at 47.990 euros, the manufacturer is now asking at least 3 euros for the Polestar 89.990. The non-plus-ultra package with performance equipment costs 96.500 euros. Orders are now on the Polestar website possible, delivery is scheduled to start in the fourth quarter of 2023.
