Not much has changed in the design of the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ compared to the predecessor. Customers still have the choice between two sizes. The frame is made of aluminum with a high-gloss finish and the back is made of frosted glass. The Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+ will be available in Phantom Black, Green, Cream and Lavender colors. The colors "Graphite" and "Lime" will also be available exclusively in the Samsung online shop.
This year, Samsung also matched the camera element of the Galaxy S23 and S23+ to that of the Ultra. So we only have the three individual lenses that protrude from the back. This does not change the weight, despite larger batteries.
The OLED display of the Samsung Galaxy S23 measures 6,1 inches and in the case of the S23+ 6,6 inches. In both cases, it has a resolution of 2.340x1.080 pixels, resulting in a PPI of 425 or 393 for the Plus model. As in the previous year, this is a Dynamic AMOLED display with a refresh rate of 48 to 120 Hz.
The following two points are new: On the one hand, the small Galaxy S23 now also achieves a peak brightness of up to 1.750 nits. On the other hand, the panels are now from the new Corning Gorilla Glass Victory 2 geschützt.
Probably the biggest changes this year are in performance. After many have complained about the in-house Exynos SoCs in the past, Samsung has given the Galaxy S23 series what is probably the strongest chip for Android smartphones on the market with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen2. And it doesn't stop there. The Snapdragon 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform for Galaxy also clocks a bit higher than in other models with Qualcomm's top SoC.
When it comes to storage, customers can choose between 128 and 256 gigabytes for the Galaxy S23 and 256 or 512 gigabytes for the Galaxy S23+. Apart from the version with 128 gigabytes, this is the fast UFS 4.0 storage. Unfortunately, buyers of a Samsung Galaxy S23 with 128 gigabytes have to be satisfied with UFS 3.1 storage. A detailed test will have to show how big the differences will be in everyday use. In all cases, buyers have 8 gigabytes of LPDDR5X RAM at their disposal.
Both models come with Samsung's One UI version 5.1, based on Android 13. Samsung promises four years of OS updates and five years of security updates.
The Korean manufacturer continues to use a system consisting of three cameras for the camera. The main camera still has a resolution of 50 megapixels and offers a field of view of 23 mm. The 1/1.56 inch sensor is optically stabilized and comes with an aperture of f/1.8.
The ultra-wide-angle camera has a resolution of 12 megapixels and the field of view is quite wide at 13 mm. However, an autofocus is still only reserved for the Ultra model.
The system is rounded off by a 10 megapixel telephoto camera. The focal length of this measures 69 mm, which means that objects can be optically enlarged up to 3 times. This is also the same sensor that we already know from the Galaxy S22 or Galaxy S22+.
Only the revised front camera is actually new. This now has a resolution of 12 megapixels and has an autofocus.
Samsung also wants to have further improved the night mode this year. With the help of expertRaw, 50 megapixel raw images, astrophotography and multi exposure are possible. Thanks to nightography video, videos should now also look better at night. In low light conditions or in situations that would normally cause blur, the videos are stable in all directions thanks to the double optical image stabilizer. Videos in general are now possible in 8K with 30 FPS and a larger viewing angle.
Samsung has increased the battery of the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ by 200 mAh to 3.900 and 4.700 mAh respectively. Thanks to the more efficient SoC, we should finally get usable battery runtimes here. That was one of the few criticisms of the predecessor. Charging continues via the USB-C 3.2 port with 25 watts for the S23 and 45 watts for the S23 Plus. Wireless charging is possible with 15 watts each and reverse wireless charging is also supported.
In addition, both the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ offer additional premium features. Both models are IP68 certified and come with stereo speakers. The Galaxy S23+ also supports Ultra Wide Band. Bluetooth 5.3 and WiFi 6E are supported by both models.
Samsung is again promoting sustainability this year. Even more recycled materials are used in production than in the Galaxy S22 series. This includes pre-consumer recycled aluminum and glass, as well as post-consumer recycled plastic made from discarded fishing nets, water barrels and PET bottles.
