After less than a year of waiting, Samsung has presented the new generation of the S series: the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9 Plus. We have summarized what makes the new devices so special.

Design

Compared to the models from the previous year, the design has changed very little. The back and the front are still made of glass, the frame is made of aluminum as usual. As for the back, Samsung has listened to its customers: the fingerprint sensor is now under the camera. The dual camera of the Galaxy S9 Plus was installed vertically like in the A8 Plus. But I'll get to the camera later. On the front it is noticeable that the edge under the Infinity Display has shrunk. Nevertheless, the company managed to build in stereo speakers that were coordinated with AKG and even support Dolby Atmos. The entire device is still protected against water and dust according to IP68 and: there is a jack plug. Alleluia.

Display

As already mentioned, an Infinity Display was also built into the new S series devices. In the small Galaxy S9 it is 5,8 inches, in the S9 Plus it is 6,2 inches. In both cases it has a resolution of 2960 × 1440 pixels in QHD + and is slightly curved towards the sides.

Specs and software

The Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus feature the company's own Exnos 9810, but in some regions, as is typical for Samsung, the latest processor from Qualcomm can also be used, which in this case is the Snapdragon 845. The Galaxy S9 also has 4GB of RAM, while the S9 Plus has 6GB of RAM. Both models come with a choice of 64GB and 256GB storage. The battery in the smaller device has a capacity of 3000mAh, and in the larger device a full 3500mAh.

The software for both smartphones is Android 8.0 Oreo in combination with the Experience UX version 9.0. Of course, Bixby was reintegrated into the operating system. As already reported in the previous weeks, Samsung has presented a feature that competes with Apple's Animojis: AR Emojis.

Thanks to the new software, you can now photograph your face with the front camera, which is then transferred to a three-dimensional emoji. If the camera didn't meet your own taste, you can still correct mistakes afterwards. These emojis can then be sent via all common messengers. In addition to your own emojis, you can also choose from a library of ready-made emojis. This library also contains Disney characters, among other things.

camera

Samsung has given the Galaxy S9 a simple camera this year, while the Galaxy S9 Plus has a dual camera. In all cases we speak of a 12MP resolution. The front camera has a resolution of 8MP. As in the Expected in advance, Samsung installed mechanical panels. This means that you can switch between f / 1.5 and f / 2.4 depending on the lighting conditions. In addition to that, there should be the possibility to record videos with 960FPS at 720p.

Prices and availability

Both smartphones can be pre-ordered now, and they will be in stores from March 16. The basic configuration of the Samsung Galaxy S9 with 64GB will have an MSRP of € 849. If you want 256GB of internal storage, the RRP climbs to € 949. The S9 Plus starts with 64GB at an RRP of € 949. For the variant with 256GB, Samsung calls an RRP of 1049 €.
