In addition to the new Sonos Arc, Sonos Five and Sonos Sub (3rd Gen) the Sonos S2 was also presented today. This is the new app and software for the Sonos devices. The three newcomers of today are already delivered with this software.

A major software innovation was only recently introduced: the Sonos radio. Now the next innovation follows, namely with Sonos S2 a new software basis for the future loudspeakers from Sonos. Already in March we reported about the new software, but today it was officially announced again. With this comes a new app and together it sets the milestone for better sound and audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos and more.

Is Sonos S2 compatible with Sonos S1?

From June 8th, Sonos S2 will be available for the speakers and in the app stores. This is intended to replace the current Sonos S1 in the long term, which is controlled with the current Sonos app. After starting Sonos S2 it will be called “Sonos S1 Controller”. This means that there will be a new app for the new system and that older devices can no longer be controlled with the S2 app. The older Sonos devices will, however, receive the update to Sonos S2. Exceptions are the Sonos Bridge, Sonos Connect 1st Gen, Connect: Amp 1st Gen, and the Play: 5 in the first generation.

What else is there?

However, if you now have older devices that have not received an update to S2, you cannot couple and group them with each other. Unless you want two apps on your smartphone and the speakers not to be able to interact with each other. Not a really good move, but there seem to be more profound changes in the software to make this necessary. The app should then also support audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos, be more secure than the previous one and have an improved appearance.

The Sonos Arc, Sonos Five and Sonos Sub (3rd Gen) devices presented today are already delivered from the factory with Sonos S2 and can only be controlled with the upcoming S2 app. So you have to update your existing Sonos ecosystem in order to be able to integrate the new speakers well. The Sonos S1 system should, however, continue to receive security patches and updates, but no more new functions.
