On Wednesday evening, Samsung officially presented the two top smartphones S8 and S8 Plus. The smartphones only differ in one point: the display size. We have all the information, specs and prices for you.

As part of Samsung's Unpacked Event, the Korean manufacturer presented two new flagships. Compared to the previous S7 series, the Edge model is no longer available. In addition, the fingerprint sensor is now on the back - there are no longer any hardware buttons.

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus: large display and good hardware

The display of the Galaxy S8 is 5,8 inches, the S8 Plus has a display of 6,2 inches. Not really bigger compared to its predecessor. The resolution is identical in both models: this is 2.960 x 1.440 pixels. The biggest difference to all previous Samsung smartphones: the "Infinity Display". This takes up almost the entire front and also has curved edges. Now you can only find a small border at the top and bottom. The camera and loudspeaker are located at the top and the typical hardware buttons are completely eliminated at the bottom. These are replaced by software buttons, making the display appear even larger. As usual from the predecessors, both models offer an always-on display.

Exynos 8895 and 4GB RAM

As a Proprocessor, Samsung uses the Exynos 8895 from its own production. In the S8 and S8 Plus, this is supported by four gigabytes of RAM. The internal memory offers space for media and apps up to 64 GB and can be expanded up to 256 gigabytes using a micro SD card. The main camera shoots photos of up to twelve megapixels on both models. On the other hand, the front camera shoots selfies with eight megapixels – even with autofocus.

For the software, Samsung relies on Android Nougat 7.1.1 - with Samsung's customized interface called Grace UX. So that the smartphone doesn't run out of juice too quickly, Samsung has installed a battery of 3000 or 3500 mAh inside. This can be refueled using USB-C and a quick charge function. Alternatively, it can also be charged inductively - but this is a lot slower.

S8 and S8 Plus with jack connection

But that's not all: Samsung hasn't omitted the headphone jack on either model. In addition, the S8 and S8 Plus offer an IP68 certification and are therefore waterproof and dustproof at a depth of 30 meters for 1,5 minutes. The integrated iris scanner or the fingerprint sensor can be used to unlock the smartphone. But this is no longer in front, but now slides to the back, right next to the camera. Somewhat inconvenient - fingerprints on the camera are in frontprogrammed.

Bixby: Samsung's new voice assistant

The biggest innovation is Samsung's new Voice assistant named Bixby. This is intended to enable voice control of the smartphone and to assist the user with questions. To activate it, you don't even need an activation word - it can be called up easily with the new physical button on the right-hand side. However, this is only available in English, Chinese and Korean at the time of release - a shame.

Prices, models and availability

The Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus can be pre-ordered now. For the smaller model you have to put 799 euros on the table - for the plus version a proud 899 euros. The colors are black, gray and silver - also known as Black Sky, Orchid Gray and Arctic Silver.

I don't think much of these huge displays, find them impractical and absolutely unnecessary as well as silly. Bigger is not always better. And I'm not a fan of Samsung either, the small devices are then equipped with poorer hardware, but why? Sony, for example, made no difference back then with my Z3 Compact, it had the same performance as the large Z3.
You get shit everywhere, but I haven't been a fan of Samsung for a long time. Most recently you presented a Chinese cell phone with 8 GB of RAM, not that this is the only indicator of a good cell phone, but the cell phone was a whole lot cheaper than the highly praised Samsung. I think the Samsung cell phone is overpriced and not at all interesting to me.

Great thing Consider buying because of this great PC dock. The large display also convinces me.

Oliver

Which PC dock do you mean, if I may ask? Can you convert it to a PC like with the Lumia or how?
