Unlimited storage for Nexus users in Google Photos

Google Photos is Google's way of managing pictures and videos. In an APK teardown Indications have now been found that Nexus users will in future be able to upload their pictures and videos to Google's cloud without any loss of quality. So far, all media that were recorded with a camera of 16 megapixels (MP) or more were compressed and cut.

Is there any use now?

Not for previous Nexus devices, because currently none of the Google smartphones with over 12,3 MP triggers and is therefore more interesting for the newer generations, but the Nexus 5X and 6P are capable of videos in 4K to record. Of course, you can already upload your photos and videos in full quality, but this will burden the free storage quota. In order to save storage space, Google processes all photos and videos before they are uploaded. As a rule, no differences to the original images can be seen with the naked eye. The note in the APK reads: "Unlimited storage space for photos and videos in original quality uploaded from your Nexus device".

Can I also take advantage of this offer as a non-Nexus owner?

So far it has not yet been clarified how Google would like to determine whether the medium was recorded with a Nexus or not, but it can be assumed that the metadata is read out for it, whereby this can be manipulated later with simple means. Also, it will be difficult to tell if the picture was not taken by a digital camera and then copied to a Nexus.

In addition, the update for Google Photos should bring new functions for sorting photo albums and integrate local folders on a device into the album view. The editing functions are also being expanded. In the future, users should be able to adjust contrast and exposure.
