WhatsApp is now free for all users - or is it?
WhatsApp has been free for all users since yesterday. The service now wants to “not focus on money, but more on growth,” said the co-founder on Monday. But then a push message contradicted this announcement - is WhatsApp free or not? We clarify.
With the takeover of WhatsApp by Facebook, the service can now cover all costs. “The takeover allowed us to concentrate on growth and not think about making money,” said co-founder Jan Koum on Monday at the DLD Internet conference in Munich.
In the past, users had to pay 0,89 euros for a year. That was not entirely true - at least in reality: most users never had to pay anything, the subscription was automatically renewed every year. But now this is to be abolished for good.
WhatsApp is now free - or is it still chargeable? Like right now?
On Monday & Tuesday, some technology blogs reported that WhatsApp should be free for all users in the next few weeks. But as of this morning, the messenger is already free for everyone. All users received a push message yesterday evening with: "WhatsApp service extended - new expiration date: for life". A few minutes later, however, another push message came up with: "WhatsApp service shortened - new expiry date: xx.xx.2016".
These messages caused a stir among most users: WhatsApp now free or not? "Yes, WhatsApp is free ”, can be given here as an answer. This somewhat confusing push message with “WhatsApp service shortened” is only likely to have been a technical error in the service.
How do you like that? Have you already had to pay for an extension on WhatsApp? We would be very interested in your opinion - write it in the comment box!
Very interesting post! Yes, I had to pay for Whatapp once, but it's worth it, isn't it?
