A website or blog becomes more and more interesting for more and more people. Websites are mostly used to present yourself or be Proto present product. In this guide, we would like to show you a few steps on how you can quickly set up a website or blog and what you should consider.

1. preparation

Before you start anything, start preparing. The best thing to do is to make a checklist of what you need for your website. We have noted three important points for you below that you should consider before you start anything:

  • Do I want my own website or would I rather have my own blog? - There are some differences between a website and a blog. For example, a website always has a static start page, whereas a blog has a news feed, i.e. a start page that is always updated with new articles.
  • Host one yourself or one Homepage builder to use? – If you host a website yourself, you have to get your hands dirty and, for example, the design of the website yourself program or it yourself prohave it programmed, regularly carry out important updates and take care of the stability and, of course, very important, the security of your own website. Should you use a website builder, such as WiX you can easily choose a design for the website and simply insert the content of the website. The respective provider then also takes care of the security of the website.
  • What is the name of my website and the future domain name? - Before you start creating the website, it is also very important to consider which page name to choose and whether the domain name is not too long and fits the website. In addition, you should be able to easily memorize the domain name - this is the only way visitors always stop by and don't forget the name in the meantime. Because: very few really look in the browser history to see what the website was called again. It is also advisable to check whether the respective domain name is still available before creating your own page. Some examples of good, not too long domain names are: davidsblog, lisastagebuch, technology blog, fruit blog ... - on the other hand bad examples are: annaseigenertechnikblog, tobias-foto-diary, really-strategic-thinker-blog, we-like-fruit-blog

2. Creating and setting up the website

Option 1 - host yourself:

  • If you have completed the preparation and already know a domain name and a page name, you can start creating and setting up the website or blog. If you have decided to host the website yourself, you have to look for a suitable hoster. In google there are many providers here. But before you decide on a web host, you should know how much storage space you need. Not that in a few months the memory will no longer be sufficient and will have to move to a new host - this process is very tedious and takes a lot of time. If you decide on a hoster, you also have to register a domain here, free domains are not available with most hosters. Then you have to decide on a CMS with which you want to implement the whole thing. Examples of well-known content management systems are: WordPress (more suitable for blogs), Typo3, Contao, Drupal and Joomla (for advanced users). In google there are also a few other providers. Then you can start setting up the website.

Variant 2 - with website construction kit:

  • At a Homepage builder like WiX, the whole thing is much easier. To start, you have to select the category: either you choose a blog or a website. Then you have to register and choose a suitable design. In the next step you have to define a page name and a domain name. With the website builder you can even get a free domain with the ending pagename.wix.com choose; the name can be changed later as desired. Then you can start adding the content in the HTML 5 editor. With WiX, you also have the option of adjusting some website settings as you like and upgrading to Premium if you need more memory and more features. If you want to protect a page with a password, you can do this very easily in the settings.

3. Getting acquainted with the website with SEO tools

Option 1 - host yourself:

  • If you host a website yourself, you have to do a little more to make the website known. The best thing to do is to create a Facebook page or a Twitter account for your website. Here you can easily motivate your friends to simply like or follow the page. Furthermore, by using the so-called hashtags (#hashtag) you automatically gain more reach on social networks. SEO is also important - also called "Search Engine Optimization". SEO is important in order to land as high as possible in the search engines.
  • There are two options here: if you use a CMS like WordPress or Joomla, there are some plugins that do the SEO optimization for you. For example, there is the Yoast SEO tool for WordPress, the iSeo plugin for Joomla, and there is also a free version here. Otherwise you have to take everything into your own hands and optimize the website for the search engines.

Variant 2 - with website construction kit:

  • In the practical HTML 5 editor from WiX, there is Website and Website settings the option under the menu item SEO make some adjustments. For example, you can choose a good page name here and use the Side menu, at Home under Settings Set suitable keywords for your own website. In addition, you have the option of completely hiding the page from the search engine search results. There are also some tips for further improvement. Under social networks you can set a share picture for Facebook or create a like button directly. Otherwise, the website builder takes over all the relevant settings by itself, which is practical!

4. Final touches

Option 1 - host yourself:

  • For the final touches you should measure the loading time of the website. This is very important, because as surveys show, no visitor likes to wait longer than 4-5 seconds for the website to load. Users are even more impatient on their smartphones and usually don't wait longer than 2-3 seconds. There are several tools on the internet with which you can measure the loading time - simply search for “measure page loading time” in a search engine and some tools will be spat out. You can measure the whole thing yourself, but it is not quite as accurate. Under Chrome it works like this: Press F12 -> Network -> reload the page, then the loading time is displayed under Load. The final loading time of the page can be found under Finish. Tools such as an integrated Facebook button or a Twitter feed prevent the website from loading quickly. You should usually omit these completely or insert them yourself.

Variant 2 - with website construction kit:

  • With WiX you don't have to worry about the loading time of the website, as the website builder optimizes everything itself. Here, some pages usually load faster than with their own hoster, since the company relies on the delivery of the new HTML 5 standard. But if you add numerous additional apps in the editor, such as a Facebook feed, everything loads more slowly, of course, as with a self-hosted website.

In conclusion, it can be said that despite everything, it is always important to regularly write something for your blog in order to gather regular readers for your website. If these readers are satisfied with the blog, you can be sure that your blog will automatically get more reach by simply "telling people".

Moin David, nice entry-level article from you. But I would still give the reference to alternatives to Wix. Homepage builders have many advantages, but like most CMS systems they have a strong login effect. That means you should get detailed information beforehand and, if necessary, even test different systems in order to find the right provider for you.
I have written a guide that compares the best providers with each other: http://www.homepage-baukasten-vergleich.de/

For people who want to have their own website or who want to start blogging, this is really good information. Really nice article, David!
