Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4: Small animals also mess up
At CES 2024, Sennheiser launched the Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4. You can read here what you need to know about them and how they fare in everyday life.
tl; dr: The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 scores with the same positive things as the predecessor, such as the flexible design and the good battery life. Improvements in tuning or ANC or support for Qualcomm's "S5 Sound Gen 2" platform are nice, but they won't help encourage third-generation owners to switch to the fourth. A little more has to be done on the next jump.
I would also like to see a USB-C-to-C cable in the packaging, Dolby Atmos and further developments in the transparency mode.

Unboxing and initial setup
The packaging that the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 comes in looks similar to that of other Sennheiser products. One difference is that it is a lot smaller this year, which is always welcome. Nevertheless, there is quite a lot included in the delivery: the in-ears in their case, three additional silicone adapters, two more silicone fins, a USB-C cable with USB-A on the other side and some instructions. Here again, I have to say that I would much prefer a double-sided USB-C cable.
The initial setup is quick. You connect the case to the power supply, which wakes up the in-ear headphones. The pairing can then be completed in the Bluetooth settings of the playback device. If you need help with the process, you can get it in the manufacturer's Smart Control app.
Design, workmanship and comfort
There are no changes in design compared to its predecessor. The headphones are available in Black Copper, Metallic Silver and Graphite color options.
But I'm not at all offended that there are no changes in appearance. On the one hand, the in-ears look chic and minimalistic, but on the other hand the design is very flexible, which ensures a high level of comfort. Basically, the footprint of the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 is very compact. The different sized fins included in the scope of delivery can then be used to adjust how wide the headphones are in the ear. Therefore, they should not pinch anyone and should never fall out of their ears. This concept worked perfectly for me.
The earplugs themselves are made of aluminum and plastic and are protected against dust and splash water according to IP54. I have no complaints about the workmanship.
The charging case is again covered with fabric and once again makes a very high-quality impression. My only point of criticism this time is the size, because other manufacturers show that a case for in-ears can also be smaller without having to make major sacrifices in terms of battery life. The workmanship is top notch - nothing wobbles or creaks at all and the headphones hold rock-solid.
Battery life
The battery life is stated to be 30 hours, whereby you should be able to listen for 7,5 hours without noise cancellation and seven hours with noise cancellation at a time. In everyday life I got well under 30 hours, especially because of the ANC, but the battery life is still very good. The MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 can be charged with a cable or wirelessly.
sound quality
There is a 7 millimeter TrueReponse driver in each in-ear pro Page. They support SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX Lossless and LC3. AuraCast and Bluetooth-LE will be delivered with a firmware update. There is also noise cancellation again. The connection to an audio source occurs via Bluetooth 5.4 in conjunction with the “S5 Sound Gen 2” platform when used with supported devices. Among other things, this ensures a higher quality connection and enables gaming without latency.
In terms of sound, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 are once again at the top. They sound natural and full and can reproduce all genres without any problems. In comparison, the sound of the WF-1000XM5 from Sony more neutral and brighter. To enjoy films, series and podcasts, Sennheiser integrated its own equalizer, which further emphasizes voices. The only thing missing from the successor is Dolby Atmos.
I was very satisfied with the active noise cancellation - constant and sudden noises are effectively filtered out. However, the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 have problems with wind. There is an anti-wind option that improves things a little, but at the same time reduces the intensity of the noise cancellation.
The transparency mode was a big surprise for me, as it is very close to the AirPods Pro, which still take first place in this discipline. It is also flexible and can be set in the app, so you can also define your own strength just for phone calls. One negative thing, however, is that your own voice is a little muffled. It is also annoying that playback pauses when you activate the transparency mode, but luckily this can be changed in the app.
App connection
The Sennheiser MOMENTUM True Wireless 4 are compatible with the manufacturer's Smart Control app. In this you can make various settings and install firmware updates. It is available for free in the Play Store for Android and App Store for iOS.
It is largely the same as when I tested the previous model, but comes with some new functions. One of them is “Sound Personalization”, which can adapt the sound to your own preferences. In order to use the feature, you must register with your email address. What is also new in the meantime is that the transparency mode can be set much more flexibly and that aptX can be deactivated for better battery life.
