The Fitbit Charge HR was already a great success. This was the first Fitbit fitness tracker that could measure the pulse. Now the manufacturer is going one better with the Fitbit Charge 2. Is it really justified for the high price? I took a closer look at the tracker for two weeks.

The comparison to the predecessor

In contrast to its predecessor, Fitbit relies on exchangeable wristbands with the Charge 2. A larger display is now also on board. In addition to the button, the Charge 2 now also offers a touchscreen with which you can navigate through menus. You can navigate through various menus with the button and navigate through a menu by tapping on the display.

The most important: the step count

The Fitbit Charge 2 always reliably counted the steps during the test. However, compared to the Jawbone UP3, for example, you have to walk more steps to reach your daily step goal. Super: even a simple hand movement was not counted. In addition to the steps, you can see the distance covered on the tracker and in the app pro Check the day, the calories burned and the floors climbed for the day. By the way: the tracker stores minute-by-minute data, such as heart rate measurement, for a week. Daily data such as steps taken and hours slept are stored on the tracker for 30 days.

The idea of “hourly activity” is also worth mentioning. The carrier should pro Walk at least 250 steps every hour – the feature wants to achieve this through hourly reminders. The tracker notifies the user every hour after 50 minutes if you were too inactive during that hour. You can also view the daily breakdown in the app. This provides information about how long you sat that day and how long the wearer was in motion.

Another interesting feature is the “SmartTrack” feature. This can surprisingly recognize exactly which sport you are currently practicing and automatically records the training in the app. There are currently over 15 sports to choose from, such as walking, running, weights, cycling, soccer, tennis and elliptical training.

Sleep analysis: pretty accurate

The Fitbit Charge 2 is a 24-hour tracker. For this reason, you should also wear it at night. Unfortunately, you can't see any information about last night directly on the tracker. It is also not possible to set an alarm directly on the tracker. These things require syncing with the Fitbit app. The tracker records information about the different sleep phases during the night. It also provides information about the sleep quality of the wearer. Every night prothe tracker records how often you woke up and were restless. Finally, there is a sleep overview. In this you can have all recorded nights displayed in comparison with the previous ones.

Heart rate measurement: throughout the day

The Charge 2 records the wearer's pulse throughout the day. This is done with LEDs on the underside of the tracker. By default, the lights turn off automatically when the fitness tracker is not on your wrist. The current heart rate as well as the resting heart rate of this day are displayed in a special submenu on the tracker. After a synchronization, you can see detailed information in the app, such as the heart rate of each recorded day. In addition, the app determines the current cardio fitness level, depending on age.

Battery life: room for improvement

The manufacturer specifies a battery life of at least 120 hours. In the test, I was only able to reach this mark very rarely with an active connection - but 96 hours were always possible. It took just under 90 minutes to fully charge. Unfortunately, the tracker does not have a simple micro-USB port. For charging you need an extra charger - very annoying. An update for the Fitbit Charge 2 was released about two weeks ago. With this it is now also possible to display the current charge level directly on the tracker.

Features: notifications and much more

There are now numerous features for the Charge 2. You can have the tracker inform you of incoming calls, messages (including WhatsApp) and upcoming appointments. However, for this feature, the tracker must be permanently connected to the smartphone via Bluetooth. The individuality of the Charge 2 is worth mentioning: all menus and the watch face can be designed individually. In addition, the order of the menus in the app can be changed. There is also another interesting feature: the so-called relax function. With this one can do coordinated breathing exercises in order to become calmer.

Conclusion: there is more

The Charge 2 impresses with accuracy, individuality and regular updates. There are always new functions for both the app and the tracker. The small features, such as exchanging the bracelet and the relaxation function, were also able to convince me completely. The tracker on the wrist did not bother us either during the day or at night. It's easy to carry and looks pretty chic.

The only thing that really bothered me was the fact that the tracker is not waterproof. A fitness tracker with so much potential and not waterproof? It's a shame. At just under 149 euros, the price is set too high in my opinion. This price for a revised Fitbit Charge HR is just too much for me. The Fitbit Charge 2 is such a really great overall package - if it weren't for the lack of water resistance and the missing GPS module in the tracker.
