After the Chinese brand Honor caused a stir last year with the Magic5 Pro, the successor came onto the market at the beginning of this year. The Honor Magic6 Pro was eagerly awaited and the anticipation was great. The smartphone has now been on the market for a good six months - we have tested how it performs in everyday life.

Conclusion

The Honor Magic6 Pro has been on the market for a while, but still competes with top-of-the-range smartphones. The elegant design of the smartphone combined with good features leaves a very positive impression. Honor has become a real pioneer in battery technology in particular, creating new impulses in this area and has almost brought a game changer to the market with the silicon-carbon battery. So it is somewhat questionable why Honor has copied so much from Apple in terms of software, while other areas are characterized by a lot of its own innovation. Ultimately, however, this does not detract from the operation of the smartphone, the installed MagicOS 8.0 makes a solid impression that is appropriate for the price. The Magic6 Pro currently costs 999 euros from Honor, and for this price you get a great smartphone with a comprehensive, versatile overall package.

Elegant appearance

The Honor Magic6 Pro makes a lasting impression when you first look at its exterior. The frame of the smartphone is made of high-quality, high-gloss aluminum. While this material is very susceptible to scratches, Honor uses synthetic leather as an alternative to a glass back, which is equally robust and stylish. The material also feels very good to the touch. When you look at the display of the Magic6 Pro, you notice the somewhat out-of-date curved edges, although these are very subtle when the display is switched on.

top-level equipment

Inside the Magic6 Pro is a Snapdragen 8 Gen 3, currently the newest processor on the market. With 12 GB RAM and 512 GB UFS 4.0, the Honor's storage is generously equipped. The slightly rounded display is a decent size at 6,8 inches, and the resolution is 1280 x 2800 pixels. In too much sunlight, 1600 nits of brightness ensure that the display content is still easy to see, and with HDR content, even 5000 nits are possible.

front with iPhone look

What is particularly striking on the front is the long hole for the front camera, which is very reminiscent of Apple. The 3D facial recognition, which is possible with the distinctive camera module on the front, is also something you normally only see on Apple and less on Android. In tests, this proved to be very reliable and fast in different lighting conditions.

As a backup for facial recognition, Honor has installed an in-display fingerprint sensor, which is just as fast, but like many other smartphones, has problems with wet fingers. The OnePlus 12, for example, copes better with this handicap with its Aqua Touch functionality.

The Honor Magic6 Pro also has an infrared port on the top and two speakers on the top and bottom, which produce a noticeably rich sound with plenty of depth. The Magic6 Pro is certified to IP68 protection against external influences, making it waterproof and dustproof.

Software: Copied, but good

The test device runs the MagicOS 8.0 software, which is smooth and absolutely appropriate for the price of the device. The most striking feature here is certainly the Magic Capsule, which is "inspired" by Apple's Dynamic Island and intelligently integrates the camera section in the display into certain displays. For example, a timer can be displayed and enlarged by tapping on the zone in order to pause or delete it. Phone calls, music or paused YouTube videos also end up in the Magic Capsule, although the latter only in the form of a much too small and unrecognizable image of the video thumbnail. Strangely enough, this display remains after closing the YouTube app, even if it is no longer used.

In the long term, Honor guarantees 4 years of Android updates and 5 years of security updates for the Magic6 Pro. Other manufacturers offer more here: depending on the brand, you can sometimes expect support for up to 7 years. Whether Honor's offer is sufficient for potential buyers ultimately depends on the expected usage time and lifespan of the smartphone.

Camera with many strengths

On the back of the Honor Magic6 Pro there is a fairly protruding camera element that encloses three lenses: a main camera with 50 Mpx, a 180 Mpx telephoto zoom lens and a wide-angle camera with 50 Mpx.

The main camera of the Magic6 Pro performs excellently in low light conditions in the dark season that is now beginning. The images are very high in contrast and offer sufficient sharpness even in low light; even constellations can be captured beautifully. In daylight, the images look lively and colorful. Zoomed-in images lose these qualities somewhat, but are still sharp up to a five-fold zoom. Beyond that, the Honor increasingly reaches its limits; theoretically, a hundred-fold zoom is possible - theoretically.

Innovative battery technology

A particularly strong innovation from Honor is the battery built into the Magic6 Pro. In China, Honor already equipped its predecessor, the Magic5 Pro, with an innovative cell chemistry, and with the Magic6 Pro, Honor is now using this globally. This cell chemistry is a silicon-carbon structure, which brings with it several interesting advantages to make everyday smartphone use easier. What is particularly impressive is that Honor uses silicon-carbon technology to achieve a much higher energy density than with conventional lithium cells, which means that the battery in the Magic6 Pro can hold an incredible 5.600 mAh. With this high capacity, one battery charge can last for two days with average to high usage times.

Furthermore, the silicon-carbon battery in the Magic6 Pro has a very high power density. Compared to conventional smartphone batteries, this is particularly noticeable in the low voltage range, when the battery is almost empty and the percentage display counts down to zero ever faster. This is not the case with the Magic6 Pro: Here, high performance is still possible even when the battery is almost empty, without the smartphone going dark straight away.

The charging data of the Honor reads well and is appropriate for the class. The Magic6 Pro can be charged with 80 watts using a cable, and up to 66 watts using an inductive charger. Honor does not include a power adapter, and buying chargers with these performance data will incur significant additional costs.

Definitely not a software copy of Apple iOS, I don't know why people keep coming up with things like that. Huawei already had everything and since Honor used to belong to Huawei they took a lot with them

I have the phone and am very satisfied.
I only have one problem.
I can't find the right charger that can handle the supposed 80 watts. I've already ordered and sent back dozens of them. But at least I managed to find a 60 watt charger.

Smoky

You need the 100W charger from Honor to be able to charge with 80W; third-party manufacturers, no matter how many watts, unfortunately do not work.

Coxen

Correct it must have 6A

Sascha

Hi Stephen,
For me, the Honor Magic 6 Pro actually charges best with the 40 watt charger from Huawei (from the old P30 Pro). A full charge takes about 35 minutes. With the XIAOMI charger with 67 watts, it takes a lot longer. But I have no explanation for this...
Best regards,

KR

There is an original charging cable (100 watts max) on the Honor homepage. That should be able to handle the stated 80 watts. Best regards

Hello Stephan, as Smoky and KR have already correctly posted, you need the original HONOR accessories. The 100W HONOR Supercharge Original can be found directly here on Amazon: https://amzn.to/3YgABVQ¹
