Muzei for Android: Live wallpaper app tested

Muzei is a live wallpaper app that I do randomly discovered and immediately made it to my smartphone. I want to explain what makes the app so special.

At Muzei, the name is at the beginning Programs. The term comes from the Russian and means something like "museum". When you start the app for the first time, you see paintings such as "The Starry Night" by Vincent van Gogh. But what makes Muzei a live wallpaper app? The answer: typing gestures. In the app settings, you can specify what should happen with a double tap and a three-finger tap. The available actions here range from temporarily removing the effects - more on that in a moment - to showing the details of the image.

Muzei: Effects

I've just added the effects for the background imagesprochen. These are adjusted via a separate tab in the app. There are three sliders for blur, brightness, and grayscale. A layer is created from these three parameters, which is laid over the actual wallpaper so that, for example, the icon labels can be seen better. As already mentioned, you can temporarily disable the effects via a fixed gesture.

Own pictures and other sources

Alternatively, there is the option of going back to your own pictures, as I did. The app offers two options for this: defining a slide show or displaying a single image. In my case, I opted for the latter variant and took a picture of my girlfriend and I. For this I created an effect layer with a mixture of blur and a regulation of the brightness. So I can see all the icons well and still happily look at the picture of my girlfriend and me. If you don't have your own photos, you can find a lot of third-party sources in the Play Store.

Muzei can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store.
