Last night scammers hacked numerous verified accounts on Twitter. Underneath all prolike Elon Musk, Apple, Barack Obama, Bloomberg, Microsoft's Bill Gates and Amazon's Jeff Bezos. We clarify the most important questions about the Twitter hack.

Anyone who was on Twitter last night must have experienced something strange. Prominente accounts have sensed that they want to double Bitcoin transferred to them - due to the corona crisis as a thank you. However, it quickly turned out that real Profis were at work. After the series, more and more verified accounts were affected. Now it is clear what exactly happened.

What exactly happened? Who was affected?

Shortly before midnight, accounts like Apple and Elon Musk started tweeting. Not by themselves, but by fraudsters. In most cases it said: "[...] I am doubling all payments sent to my BTC address for the next 30 minutes. You send $ 1,000, I send you back $ 2,000. BTC address: [...] "

Of course, you should never take such things seriously - even if such tweets come from directly from verified accounts or proMinent people come. And the list of affected accounts is far from complete, accounts like Joe Biden, Uber, Coinbase, Benjamin Netanyahu, Charlee Lee, Justin Sun and more were also affected. On the other hand, what is probably the most popular Twitter account, that of US President Donald Trump, was not affected.

How much money did the fraudsters steal?

In short - enough fell for it. Adding up the various Bitcoin wallets results in a total of over 100.000 dollars that the fraudsters received. And the Bitcoin was neither doubled nor transferred back.

Why can't you get your Bitcoin back or have it reversed?

You should always know that unlike a bank transfer (at least domestically), you can never get the money back with Bitcoin payments. Also, the recipient is not identifiable and there is no company "Bitcoin" in the middle that could charge back the money. The latter because the system is decentralized and there is no company behind it. Although Bitcoin is probably the most anonymous payment method, it is also the worst when it is closed Proshould come. Handle with care.

How did Twitter react?

Nothing happened for almost two hours, only the Bitcoin tweets that were sent were on Twitter prominent accounts are deleted after less than five minutes. The company subsequently disabled verified Twitter accounts from posting or writing. This "write lock" has not yet been lifted for some. While unverified accounts could still post, password resets have been disabled globally.

How exactly did it happen?

Until the early hours of the morning, nobody knew how Twitter was hacked, except for Twitter itself. The company left it a few hours ago via Twitter know that the fraudsters probably infiltrated the systems through "social engineering" on Twitter employees. Some employees are also said to have been paid to give access to internal systems on Twitter, such as Vice reported.

The employees are said to have initiated a password reset through an internal portal, which meant that the accounts could then be taken over for a reason that was probably still unknown. How exactly this happened is still unclear at the moment.

We will update the article as more information becomes available.
