Apple Pencil: Which is the right one?

Apple yesterday introduced two new iPads that work with the Apple Pencil are compatible. But with which one exactly? With the Apple Pencil or the Apple Pencil?

In 2015, the first Apple Pencil came with the first iPad Pro. That was the one you plugged into the Lightning port to charge it, which still looks extremely weird. Last fall, Apple introduced the iPad Pro for 2018. With it came an Apple Pencil with a new design, but it's also just called the Apple Pencil. So what I'm getting at is that both models have exactly the same name. Couldn't they have come up with an additional name to tell the things apart?

Apple Pencil: which one should I grab?

That is the big question, as the two identical names can be quite confusing. The newer Apple Pencil is only compatible with the iPad Pro (2018), as this has the magnetic charging surface on the side. Interestingly, the first Apple Pencil is not compatible with the latest Pro, although that would technically be possible. However, it can be used with the two newly introduced iPads, the iPad (2018) and all previous iPad Pros.

Hopefully Apple will give a successor a more independent name.
