Apple plans Siri revolution: “Campos” is intended to be a chatbot.

Apple will transform Siri into a fully-fledged generative AI chatbot later this year. The new technology, codenamed "Campos," will be deeply integrated into iOS 27. This marks the end of Apple's previous strategy of using AI functions only subtly in the background.
Strategy change: From Siri to Google Gemini
Apple is now reacting to the success of ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Therefore, software chief Craig Federighi is making a radical U-turn. According to Bloomberg News The company is transforming Siri into a dialogue-oriented interface.
Since its own AI development is currently insufficient, Apple is making extensive use of external assistance. Specifically, "Campos" is based on a specialized version of Google's Gemini 3. Apple pays the search engine giant approximately one billion US dollars annually for this access. In the future, the chatbot will run on Google's powerful TPU servers, while early updates will still utilize Apple's own servers.
The timeline: Rollout for iOS 26.4 and iOS 27
The rollout will take place in two phases to ensure the stability of the system, according to the report:
- Spring 2026 (iOS 26.4): The first model is the “Apple Foundation Model v10” with 1,2 trillion parameters. It primarily improves the analysis of screen content.
- September 2026 (iOS 27): The true chatbot mode will appear with iOS 27 (codename “Rave”) and the more powerful v11 model.
The new Siri handles complex tasks directly within apps. For example, the AI searches for photos using content descriptions or composes emails based on calendar data. Furthermore, the chatbot could eventually replace the classic Spotlight search entirely.
Apple remains skeptical about data privacy.
Despite the new features, Apple remains cautious about data privacy. The company is currently discussing internally the long-term memory of its AI. Apple likely wants to severely limit past interactions to protect user privacy.
However, this decision could limit personalization compared to OpenAI or Google. The official unveiling of the new technology is expected to take place at WWDC in June 2026.
