Since June 15, 2017 there is no more EU roaming. That means saving money abroad for surfing and making calls. Now there is good news for frequent callers and SMSers abroad: since yesterday it has been cheaper to make calls and send SMS to other EU countries. New price caps now apply.

EU roaming is well received. We have never used as much data volume abroad as we do now. At the moment there is no need to be afraid of high bills in the EU. However, there was still one cost trap: calling and writing SMS from Germany to other EU countries was sometimes quite expensive. It still costs something, but now significantly less.

Calls to other EU countries are up to 1 euro cheaper

The new EU regulation for the maximum limit for calls and SMS has been in force for every EU country since yesterday. A call to other EU countries can now be a maximum of 22,8 cents pro cost minute, pro SMS are allowed Provider now charge a maximum of 7,2 cents. If you make calls from within Germany to another member state in the future, it will often be up to 20 cents cheaper for some customers. Both providers in Germany and in Austria often have up to 49 cents pro minutes to other EU countries. Telekom in Germany was even worse: calls to other EU countries cost up to 1,99 euros with prepaid tariffs pro Minute. In general, the prices for EU international telephony vary greatly among providers.

Now all Provider adapted to the new regulation and mostly use the upper limit to the full. Regardless of whether it is a prepaid or contract tariff, no provider may charge more than the upper limit. Oddly enough, calling from another EU country does not cost anything – we have that here already reported. Why the charges for telephony to another EU member state are not finally abolished is inexplicable.

Nothing changes for all customers who have a certain number of free minutes in other EU countries or abroad. Only if you then exceed the included minutes with these tariffs does the upper limit apply again. If you don't have a tariff with free minutes to other EU countries, you pay pro Minute according to the upper limit. Providers like Spusu in Austria have them Telephony costs to other EU countries generally abolished. The exact fees can be found in the fee table of your respective provider - you may even pay less than what is stated for the upper limit.
