DJI presented a new drone this morning with the DJI Mavic Air 2. The successor to the first Mavic Air comes with an improved flight time, better obstacle detection, 4K and 60 FPS.

DJI installed in the Mavic air 2 now a new camera sensor. Instead of a 1/2,33 inch, DJI now uses a 1/2 inch sensor. This should allow the camera to cope much better in dark light situations. The resolution of the sensor is 48 megapixels. The "pixel binning" technology known from smartphones results in a 12 megapixel image or the full resolution 48 megapixel image, depending on the motif. The camera can record 4K videos at up to 60 FPS. In addition, you can even record in Full HD with up to 240 FPS. In the future, the Mavic Air 2 will even be able to record hyperlapse videos in 8K. You can do color grading in D-Cinelike Prorecord file. The recordings are saved on the 8 GB memory or the up to 256 GB microSD card.

Significantly improved flight time

The battery has also grown again compared to its predecessor. Of course, this also results in a significantly improved flight time. Instead of 21, the Mavic Air 2 should now be able to fly 34 minutes. The larger battery then also takes care of the significantly heavy weight of 570 grams. The Mavic Air 140 has now become a whole 2 grams heavier. DJI has also improved obstacle detection on the Mavic Air 2. The software of the new Mavic Air now has the best obstacle detection of all DJI drones installed. However, DJI only installed sensors on the back, front and bottom. The Mavic Air 2 can therefore still not perceive any movements that are made to the left or right.

Price and availability

Overall, the Mavic Air 2 looks like a very promising update. The Mavic Air 2 can be pre-ordered now. Sales will start in mid-May. In terms of price, we're talking about 849 euros, if you opt for the “Fly More” combo, you even have to put 1049 euros on the table.
