Intel today showed its new "Coffee Lake-H" processors. Starting with the quad-core i5-8300H, through an i7-8850H, to an i9-8950HK. The new chips also have the so-called "Thermal Velocity Boost" technology, which enables single-core turbos of up to 4,8 GHz.

Mobile processors

Intel is making every effort to win back potential AMD supporters, and is now offering maximum performance for notebooks. In addition to the two i9 and two i7 hexacores, there are also two new i5 processors with four cores and two new Xeon processors. All are manufactured using a 14nm process.

The most interesting should be the new i9 processors. The top model offers six cores and therefore twelve threads. The 45-watt chip basically runs at 4,6 GHz. However, thanks to the new Thermal Velocity Boost technology, it reaches 4,8 GHz. It is still unclear how much the i9 chips will cost. However, it should be clear that you won't find them in any 1000 Euro notebook.

If you like to overclock your notebook, you should take a look at the i7-8850H. Intel describes it as partially unlocked for overclocking. This means you are limited, but you can increase the multiplier by up to four levels. This is understandable for mobile processors, as the cooling in notebooks is often not designed for overclocking.

The new Xeon chips are hexacores that support vPro and ECC. These are tools for remote maintenance and memory error correction. These are important features for workstations and servers.processors.

Advantages of the new processors

Most of the new chips support USB 3.1. But performance is much more important, and the differences between the six-core processors and their predecessors could be enormous. The i9-8950HK is said to be able to render an Adobe Premiere project around 60 percent faster than an i7-7820HK. The new processors are also said to deliver significantly more performance when playing complex games such as PUBG. This does not just apply to the i9.
There will be new notebooks in the coming weeks from Gigabyte and MSI, among others.

Also new desktop chips

The new ones are mainly the i5-8600 and i5-8500 with six cores and an i3-8300 with four cores. Due to the higher number of cores, better performance can be expected here too. With these processors there are also new chipsets for the 1151 v2 socket. There are also some boards with the new chipsets on the market. As with the notebook processors, USB 3.1 is supported and the processors are manufactured using the 14nm process.
