iOS 10 goes into the third round. This update includes the new APFS file system. In addition, iOS 10.3 brings with it even minor design changes and many improvements.

After seven preliminary versions, iOS 10.3 is now officially available on all supported devices. Owners of AirPods should be particularly pleased with the update: the small earplugs can now be easily located in the “iPhone search”. The update is also interesting for other users. In addition to the new file system, it also brings some improvements and bug fixes.

New file system APFS

The biggest innovation concerns the new APFS file system. This file system, specially adapted to Apple devices, should run the iPhone and iPad faster and apps should start faster. By the way: when changing to the new file system, the memory is formatted. Although all data is normally taken over, a backup is highly recommended. The update could also take longer than usual.

AirPods are easier to find again

That was not all. The easy loss of the new wireless AirPods has been known to Apple for a long time. That is why there is a function with iOS 10.3 that enables the user to easily find his AirPods again. To do this, you simply have to select your paired AirPods under the "iPhone Search" app and start tracking. Now the user sees the location of the small earplugs displayed on a map. However, this only works if they are within 100 meters and connected via Bluetooth. Otherwise the app only shows the last known location. To make the search easier, a tone can also be played on the AirPods.

Bug fixes and improvements

Last but not least, there are a few improvements. These concern, among other things, the Calendar, Maps, Home, Siri, Safari and Mail apps. Siri has also been expanded and now offers additional support with third-party apps. Developers of payment apps, driver service apps and car apps can now offer Siri support for their app. A bug has also been fixed that made it possible for attackers to keep iPhone and iPad users in Safari in an infinite popup loop.
