Sonos: New app and new operating system on the way

The popular manufacturer of multi-room speakers, Sonos, is launching a new operating system and a new app for its own products. All information about the new products.

Currently, all Sonos products run the S1 operating system, which is compatible with the well-known app. In June, the manufacturer plans to launch a new version of the OS, S2, along with a new app that will only work with the new S2 systems. This update will include higher resolution audio formats and a larger audio bandwidth. It is not yet known which products in the range will receive the update. However, I assume that all devices that the company has introduced in the last two years will get S2.

Sonos: using S1 and S2 devices together - what now?

Now, some readers are sure to ask the following two questions:

• I still have products with S1 – which app can I use now?
• I have products with the S1 and S2 software – can I combine them in one app?

At the very beginning I mentioned that the new app is only compatible with the speakers that S2 runs on. After the new software is released, it will be available under the name “Sonos” in the App Store and the Play Store. The “Sonos S1 Controller” app will then be available for S1 devices. This should answer the second question: No, you can't group devices with different software in one app (my opinion: not really intuitive).

At least you can trade in old products for a new device. Sonos has launched a "Trade Up" program where you get a 30 percent discount if you trade in an old device for a new one.
