With the Pixel 10 Pro XL, Google is launching the largest and most powerful model in its new smartphone generation. It's said to offer the best cameras, the brightest display, and the longest battery life in the series—making it a contender not only within the Android market but also against the iPhone 17 Pro (Max). We tested it.

Design & processing

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is a true heavyweight—literally and figuratively. At 232 grams, it weighs even more than the Galaxy S25 Ultra (218 g) and just above the iPhone 17 Pro Max (231 g). Before you decide, you should hold it in your hands, because its size and weight aren't for everyone.

However, the build quality is top-notch: an aluminum frame meets a matte Gorilla Glass Victus 2 back, which feels premium and grippy. Paired with the official Google case, the result is a very pleasant feel that's also impressive in everyday use. The camera bar remains the series' signature feature.

The vibration motor is particularly impressive: It's one of the best on the market and conveys a premium feel with every notification or input. Overall, the Pixel 10 Pro XL feels like a true premium flagship.

Display

The Pixel 10 Pro XL is a true showcase for Google's display technology. At 6,8 inches, it feels massive, but the 20:9 aspect ratio makes it manageable. The LTPO OLED panel operates with a variable refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz and delivers a razor-sharp display at 1344 × 2992 pixels.

The brightness, in particular, sets new standards: With a peak of up to 3.300 nits, it's the brightest smartphone display I've ever used. HDR content profit enormously, and even in direct sunlight everything remains clearly readable.

In everyday use, the display impresses with rich contrast, natural color reproduction, and smooth animations. While the higher resolution is disabled by default to save battery life, turning it on visibly increases sharpness.

This puts the panel in the absolute top league – on par with the best displays from Samsung and Apple.

Performance

Inside the Pixel 10 Pro XL is Google's new Tensor G5, flanked by a whopping 16 GB of RAM and optionally 256 GB, 512 GB, or even 1 TB of UFS 4.0 storage. This ensures fast app launches, smooth multitasking, and enough reserves for many years of everyday use.

For the first time, the Tensor G5 is no longer manufactured by Samsung, but by TSMC – making it significantly more energy-efficient than its predecessors. However, under longer loads, such as gaming or video rendering, you can still see that Apple and Qualcomm have the edge. It's not a true performance miracle like Apple's A-series chips.

The Tensor's greatest strength lies where Google wants it: in AI features. This is where the chip fully exploits its customization capabilities, supported by the 16 GB of RAM, which will provide plenty of headroom for the future. Games run smoothly. prowithout any problems, and the performance is more than sufficient for everyday use – only real power users will notice the differences to the market leaders.

camera

With the Pixel 10 Pro XL, Google relies on proven hardware from last year: a 50-megapixel main camera (23 mm), a 48-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens (13 mm), and a 48-megapixel telephoto lens (113 mm). Thanks to improved optical image stabilization and autofocus on the ultra-wide-angle lens (only on the Pro models), a macro mode is also available.

In everyday life, the setup delivers excellent results. In daylight, the photos appear very natural, with a high dynamic range and a good balance between light and dark areas. Colors remain somewhat more muted and less contrasty than with Apple, which many users will appreciate.

The ultra-wide-angle camera impresses with its sharpness right into the corners, beating the Pixel 10, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and even Samsung's Fold series. The Pro XL is particularly strong when zooming: up to 10x, it delivers near-optical quality, with more detail and less noise than the iPhone 17 Pro—although Apple's architecture still delivers slightly more natural results in a direct comparison.

At night, the main camera with its larger sensor clearly shows advantages over the standard Pixel 10, while the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses tend to reach their limits. The live preview in the viewfinder is still weak, but the final photo is almost always better than what you initially see.

Camera AI

New AI features include "Pro Res Zoom," which enables magnifications of up to 100x by generative AI adding details. This works surprisingly well for architecture or landscapes, but reaches its limits with fine structures like hair or text. In addition, Google is the first manufacturer to offer optional C2PA content credentials to transparently identify image origin and editing.

With the “Camera Coach,” Google goes one step further: Using Gemini analysis, the device provides tips on perspective, light, or mode – a clever helper for making photos even more consistent.

The selfie camera has been significantly upgraded: With 42 megapixels instead of 10,5 on the Pixel 10, it delivers visibly sharper and brighter results that are impressive even in low light.

Google remains strong in video, but can't compete with Apple—the iPhone remains the benchmark for mobile videography. Nevertheless, the Pro XL's recordings are perfectly adequate for most applications, including stable 4K recordings with all lenses.

Software

The Pixel 10 Pro XL runs Android 16, bringing not only Google's latest software but also a promise of seven years of updates, including new Android versions, monthly security patches, and regular feature drops. This makes it one of the smartphones with the longest guaranteed support ever.

It's also the first device to feature the new Material 3 Expressive design language. New color themes, fresh fonts, and smoother animations are intended to make the experience feel more natural. Particularly exciting: elements like notifications react in such a way that they almost feel like physical objects. However, during testing, there were still minor bugs with personalization, such as changing wallpapers.

KI

The real strength, however, lies in the AI features. One new feature is live translation of phone calls, which recreates and translates the voices of the other party in real time – impressive, though not always accurate when it comes to technical terms. AI-supported image processing using natural language processing has also been announced, but was not yet available in Germany at the time of testing.

Exclusively for the Pro models: Buyers receive one year of access to Google AI Pro, including features such as video generation with Veo 3. Also practical: “Magic Cue” blends proactively integrates information from other apps, but it wasn't yet available in Germany. However, camera sharing for Gemini Live is already available, allowing you to explain everyday objects.

In combination with the Tensor G5, the whole thing feels much smoother than in the previous generation – Google's vision of an AI-centric smartphone becomes noticeably more tangible here.

Battery

The Pixel 10 Pro XL boasts the largest battery in the series at 5.200 mAh. It now supports wired charging at up to 45 watts—a noticeable improvement over the 30 watts of the smaller models. Wirelessly, it's the only Pixel to already support the Qi 2.2 standard with up to 25 watts and uses "Pixelsnap": a magnetic solution similar to MagSafe that reliably holds the device in place.

In everyday use, the Pro XL delivers a solid and reliable battery life. A full day of intensive use—including the camera, high display brightness, and apps—is no problem; there's usually still some battery life left. However, you'll usually have to recharge it overnight. It doesn't reach the extreme values of some competing models, but the battery life is still perfectly suitable for everyday use and consistent.

Sound

Google has improved its speakers: The Pixel 10 Pro XL sounds noticeably fuller and more dynamic than its predecessors. Music and videos proThe Pro XL offers more volume, and even at higher volumes, the sound remains surprisingly clear. The difference compared to the standard Pixel 10 is clearly noticeable – the Pro XL is one of the better smartphones in its class in terms of sound.

Conclusion

The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is without a doubt the most complete and powerful Pixel ever. It combines a gigantic, brilliant display, a camera with new standards in zoom, numerous smart AI features, and solid battery life in a package that remains attractive over the long term thanks to seven years of updates.

The weaknesses are manageable, but they exist: At 232 grams, the Pro XL is a real brute, and in terms of raw performance, the Tensor G5 can't quite keep up with Apple or Qualcomm. Even in the video sector, the iPhone remains the benchmark.

Nevertheless, if you want the best camera in the Pixel universe, the brightest display, and the latest AI integration, you'll find a flagship-level smartphone here—and a real alternative to Samsung and Apple.
