The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is here and promises to deliver the ultimate smartphone experience. But can it live up to its reputation? In this test report we take a close look at the Galaxy S24 Ultra.

Design and processing:

The S24 Ultra breaks with tradition and says goodbye to the curved display. Instead, Samsung uses a flat panel that flows seamlessly into the titanium frame. This gives the smartphone an elegant and modern look that is robust and high-quality at the same time. The matte surface of the titanium ensures a comfortable grip and prevents fingerprints.

Samsung has further optimized the processing of the S24 Ultra compared to its predecessor. There are hardly any gaps anymore, the S Pen fits precisely into the housing and the edges around the display have become significantly narrower. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 display glass offers additional protection against scratches and drops.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: The display

The 6,8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display of the S24 Ultra is a real highlight. With a resolution of 3088 × 1440 pixels, an adaptive refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and a maximum brightness of 2.600 nits, it offers unparalleled image quality, which is significantly ahead of the iPhone 15 Pro Max and Google Pixel 8 Pro lies. Colors appear vibrant and rich, contrasts are razor-sharp and everything is clearly visible even in bright sunlight.

The S24 Ultra's display is flat compared to its predecessor and no longer has curved edges. This change was made to improve handling of the stylus at the edges and follow the trend towards flat displays. The display edges have also become narrower, resulting in a more symmetrical appearance. The new Gorilla Glass Armor glass is 75% less reflective than its predecessor, resulting in improved viewing and fewer reflections.

The hardware:

The S24 Ultra is powered by the Snapdragon for Galaxy, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 optimized specifically for Samsung Processor. Combined with 12 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of internal storage, it ensures smooth performance and handles even demanding tasks effortlessly.

The Galaxy S24 Ultra is the only S24 device to have a Qualcomm Proprocessor.

The vibration motor of the Galaxy S24 Ultra is significantly improved compared to the previous model. It's now stronger and more precise, resulting in better feedback for notifications, calls and games.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: The sound

The S24 Ultra has two stereo speakers that deliver rich and voluminous sound. Highs and mids are clear and distinct, but bass could use a little more punch. However, the sound is completely sufficient for occasional music enjoyment or watching videos. Voice messages and audio for videos are also at a high level, although nothing has changed either positively or negatively compared to the S23 Ultra.

The cameras:

The Galaxy S24 Ultra houses a quad-camera system on the back that is equipped with the following sensors:

200-Megapixel main camera
50 Megapixel telephoto lens (5x optical zoom)
10 Megapixel telephoto lens (3x optical zoom)
12 Megapixel ultra wide angle camera

The main camera delivers sharp and detailed photos in all lighting conditions. The 5x telephoto lens offers a significant improvement over its predecessor and enables razor-sharp zoom shots. The 10x telephoto lens is a bit weaker, but still good enough for usable photos. The ultra-wide-angle camera captures a lot of image space and is ideal for landscape shots or group photos. I always found the 100x “space zoom” impressive, but useless. It's the same with the S24 Ultra; I've never actually zoomed more than 30x.

Night mode and portraits:

The S24 Ultra's night mode ensures impressive photos even in low light. Details are clearly visible and image noise is effectively minimized. Portrait mode precisely softens the background and perfectly highlights the person in the foreground.

The software:

The S24 Ultra runs Android 14 and Samsung's One UI 6.1 user interface. Like Google, Samsung now offers seven years of software updates, which is very commendable. The software is intuitive to use and offers numerous functions and customization options. This year, however, Samsung is focusing heavily on the new “Galaxy AI” functions, which are provided by the new Processors can be made possible.

We'll give you a little overview:

Circle to Search: Quickly access information by drawing circles on the display, which then initiates a “backward search” through Google Lens.

This has actually been my most used feature and is also very useful.

Circle to Search is one of the useful AI features

Writing assistant: Convert voice recordings into texts

In the recorder app it is now possible to convert a voice recording into text. Google Pixel users have known this for several years, it works surprisingly well and can be very useful for taking notes.

Samsung interpreter: Real-time translation of conversations

Rather disappointing, simple conversations are possible with it, but you can't do more than order a taxi. In addition, a robot voice could initially seem a little intimidating to the other person.

Generated background images: Creating custom wallpapers from “genres” and words

Also a nice feature, you can definitely get creative with it, but it is a feature that is generally built into Android 14.

Generative backgrounds provide variety.

Summarize: No matter whether in the browser or in the notes. The Galaxy can now summarize web pages or notes.

This only works in Samsung Internet Browser, but surprisingly well. Anyone who has written down long notes and would like to forward a summary can now do so too.

Photo editing: Erase objects, move them, make them larger

This also works well, especially with people or objects you don't immediately notice it in the background. But deleting a person in the foreground of a picture is very noticeable.

Image editing is also available on the Google Pixel.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra: battery life

The S24 Ultra's battery has a capacity of 5000 mAh and provides good battery life. In the test I always came away with the device without it ProProblems through the day, but for a longer night I charged it for a few minutes before going out. The S24 Ultra supports wired fast charging of up to 45 watts and wireless fast charging of up to 15 watts. This is quite fast compared to Google or Apple Living or Honor Samsung, on the other hand, is still unable to cope.

And finally ...

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is an excellent smartphone that impresses in almost every respect. It offers an elegant design, a brilliant display, a powerful Proprocessor, a versatile camera and a long battery life. However, the price is very high and the AI functions could be a little more sophisticated. Since the RRP has not been called for a long time and the price is moving towards 1000 euros, you can definitely buy from this limit.
