The 800-volt technology is now also being used in the Volvo EX90. Already used in the new Volvo ES90, the technology will also be used in the large electric SUV starting in 2026. An upgrade to the core computing platform also brings new and improved safety and driver assistance features.

Faster charging speed and shorter charging times for the Volvo EX90

Volvo has announced a technology update for the 2026 model year EX90, which we have already tested announced. The electric SUV will feature an 800-volt architecture for the first time, enabling higher charging power and thus shorter charging times. Thanks to Volvo's new battery management software, the EX90 will be able to recharge enough energy for a range of up to 250 kilometers in just ten minutes. Previously, Volvo stated that a DC fast-charging station with a maximum peak charging power of 250 kW could recharge the vehicle for up to 170 km of range in ten minutes. Volvo has not yet provided precise details on the peak charging power of the EX90 upgrade. However, this would have to be significantly higher than 300 kW to achieve the stated times.

Compared to the previous 400-volt system, the new architecture is designed to reduce heat generation during charging and ensure more efficient energy use. 800 volt technology They also deliver more power for faster acceleration while using energy more efficiently. Furthermore, the battery and electric motors are lighter, as the switch to 800 volts made it possible to reduce material consumption.

New Nvidia processors for even more computing power in the EX90

Another update concerns the core computing platform. With two NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Orin processors The EX90 achieves a computing power of around 500 trillion operations pro Second (also known as TOPS). This enables the use of new and enhanced safety and driver assistance features, such as the Connected Safety function, which allows connected vehicles to warn each other about slippery roads, upcoming hazards, and accident locations.

Also new is the automatic emergency call function (eCall) in the Emergency Stop Assist system. This is complemented by an enhanced automatic emergency steering function that also works in the dark, as well as the new generation of Park Pilot Assist, which also handles parallel parking in parking spaces. Owners of the current EX90 can receive the processor upgrade free of charge during a regular workshop visit.

After the premiere in Volvo ES90 The Volvo EX90 also features the new electrochromatic panoramic glass roof. The transparency of the glass can be adjusted at the touch of a button to reduce sunlight in the interior or increase privacy. Production of the Volvo EX90 with all these innovations will begin in mid-November 2025. The upgraded electric SUV is available to order now.
