Apple Pay and its obstacles in everyday life

Soon, Apple Pay will finally be rolled out in Germany. But as great as the joy is, the obstacles in everyday life will currently slow down this payment method considerably.

Some will jump for joy because the time has finally come and Apple Pay is coming to Germany with the iOS 12 update. It's finally time to leave the superfluous bank cards on your desk and simply pay with your mobile phone. But as nice as it sounds, it will unfortunately not be as easy as it initially appears.

How exactly does the payment work?

It's actually very simple: You just have to add your credit card to Apple's wallet and you always have your digital card with you. To use it, the iPhone or Apple Watch is held on a terminal and released via Face ID or Touch ID. The prerequisite for this is that you are at the relevant bank.

Which banks will be available at launch?

  • N26
  • Boon
  • Deutsche Bank
  • HypoVereinsbank
  • Hanseatic Bank
  • Fidor bank
  • VIM Pay
  • bunq
  • American Express
  • Santander Bank
  • Commdirect Bank

What are the risks at the beginning?

There are already several thousand NFC terminals in shops, restaurants and even department stores. However, some are not yet activated or are out of order on a regular basis. It is precisely for this reason that it is imperative that companies upgrade their terminals as quickly as possible and keep them intact.

You can already pay contactless with NFC cards

Should you now do without your card completely?

I have a clear opinion on this: No, because you should wait and always have a card with you as an emergency solution in case a terminal does not work - it will take a while until the German infrastructure is ready and stable.

I'm also getting a little nervous: / But hey, the day is not over yet and in California it's just morning 🙂
If this is not right now with the publication date, I will have to worry about whether I will hold the author of the article liable ...

The biggest Problem that I see is that the Credit card acceptance is just not that high in Germany. I am currently still using boon. and I have an account with N26, so I already know where I can pay with Apple Pay, i.e. where I cannot pay with a credit card.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of companies in Germany, even larger ones, that only accept the giro card. There is an urgent need for action here!

Where did the information come from that Apple Pay is coming on September 19.9?

Kevin Özgun

The info comes from Twitter ... There was a published line-up on the day of the keynote. So I took it out. Once again, only Apple knows whether it is the truth. See "AirPower".

Hans

Is there a link to the said twitter post?

Marcel

I imagine I've heard that before. So it's not brought from anywhere ...

“On September 19th, Apple Pay will finally be rolled out in Germany.” But iOS 12 should start today, right?

Kevin Özgun

Yes that's right. IOS 19 is to be rolled out today at 12 p.m. CEST.
