Next to the Apple TV 4K and the iPhones, to which an article will come, Apple has presented the Series 3 of their smartwatches. This year there is the possibility of using LTE in order to be able to leave the iPhone at home for good. Otherwise the watch can do that.

Design

The Apple Watch Series 3 looks exactly like the Series 2. The dimensions and all other things are completely identical to its predecessor. The display is still an OLED panel. With the 38mm version it has a resolution of 272 × 340 pixels, with the 42mm watch it has a resolution of 312 x 380 pixels. New this year is that you can buy the Apple Watch in an LTE version. You can recognize these watches by the red color of the digital crown. The engineering team from Apple also managed to hide the antenna strips in the display, so that they are not noticeable in everyday life.

Straps & Bracelets

The same wristbands can be used on the Series 3 as on the Series 3. In addition, the range has grown by a few variations. Hermes, for example, made new ribbons. Of course there are new versions of their straps from Nike and Apple has presented their new sports loop.

Specs

In the Apple Watch Series 3, the new W2 Proprocessor installed by Apple. This offers 70% more performance compared to the previous watch, which is just cool. It also offers greater stability with Bluetooth and WLAN connections, which is always welcome. Despite everything, according to Apple, there should still be at least one day of battery life inside.

Now we come to the LTE capability, which Apple has solved quite interestingly. You can book the option to save this on the Apple Watch via certain tariffs. This is done without a SIM card, but is not available in all countries. Too bad. What's definitely cool is that you can now do things like streaming Apple Music online without an iPhone. iMessage can also be used this way.

Software

When it comes to software, Apple relies on watchOS. All important innovations can be found in our article on WWDC 2017. In the case of the Apple Watch Series 3, there is an additional change. During phone calls, the software can filter out external noises that could disrupt the conversation using the watch's microphone. Unlike the FaceID demo, it worked flawlessly.

Prices and availability

There are several versions of the Apple Watch again this year. The version with LTE is available in aluminum in the colors gold, silver and space gray, as well as in stainless steel in the colors silver and space black, at a price of € 449. With the standard version of the watch, the stainless steel versions are omitted, which is why it only costs € 369. Apple also has an Apple Watch Edition made of ceramic again on offer. This year there is also a gray version. The price remained similarly high at € 1399. For the Nike + watches you have to pay around € 399.

All versions can be pre-ordered from Apple from September 15 this year. You'll find them in stores from September 22nd.
