Every few months there is the so-called “Google Pixel Feature Drop” for Google smartphones. With this update there are always new functions and major improvements. In December the time has come again - the Pixel 3, Pixel 4 and Pixel 5 are getting new features.

Along with the regular security updates, there are also new functions on Google's smartphones. These are not new operating system versions (such as Android 11 or 12), but a simple update. In December 2020 there will be another “Google Pixel Feature Drop” with new features for all Pixel smartphones from the 3rd generation. In this article, we'll take a closer look at what's new.

New functions in the Google Pixel Feature Drop for December 2020

  • "Hold For Me" [Pixel 3 - Pixel 5]: For the time being, this function is only available in the USA. With this you can simply transfer the annoying music on hold hotlines to the Google Assistant. He then waits for the user, takes a transcript and notifies you when someone speaks on the other end of the line. Meanwhile, the smartphone remains completely silent and does not interfere. You can find a preview for this feature here.
  • Ultra power saving mode [Pixel 3 - Pixel 5]: Ultra power saving mode has been available for the Pixel 5 for a long time. With this, all unselected apps are closed in the background after activation in order to save battery. The smartphone then lasts much longer than usual. This feature will now also be submitted for the other Pixel devices.
  • Split screen in Google Duo [Pixel 3 - Pixel 5]: You can now share your smartphone's screen in Google Duo group video calls. That was already possible before, but only in two phone calls.
  • Playlists from "Now Playing" [Pixel 3 - Pixel 5]: With "Now Playing" the smartphone listens to music being played in the vicinity. So if you walk through a shopping center with your pixel smartphone with this function switched on, you “collect” music in the history on the smartphone. This is nothing new. Now you can create a playlist in YouTube Music from these saved songs.
  • Adaptive Charging [Pixel 4 - Pixel 5]: Adaptive charging ensures optimal charging. Depending on the charging time of the smartphone, this is optimized in order to be fully charged again at a certain point in time. If you plug the smartphone in at night, for example, it charges more slowly to save the battery.
  • Adaptive Connectivity [Pixel 4a 5G - Pixel 5]: If you have one of the two 5G-capable Pixel smartphones, the system now automatically switches from 5G to 4G if the additional bandwidth is not required to save energy.
  • Adaptive Sound [Pixel 4a 5G - Pixel 5]: If you activate this feature in the new December update, the system automatically adjusts the audio playback according to the ambient volume. So the music should sound even better, depending on the environment.

Further improvements

  • New wallpapers & homescreen designs [Pixel 3 - Pixel 5]: In the new December 2020 Feature Drop there are new wallpapers and new home screen designs from the Pixel 3.
  • Better touch sensitivity [Pixel 3 - Pixel 5]: This new function can be activated in the display settings to improve the touch sensitivity of display films.
  • Improved GPS accuracy [Pixel 4a 5G & Pixel 5]

The update is rolling out immediately for all Pixel users and will be available to all users in a few weeks. You can find a short summary of all functions here in the video:
