Made by Google 2018: Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL presented

In addition to the Google Home Hub, the two new Pixel flagships were also presented this evening. The Google Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL were ahead of the game completely leaked, nevertheless there are some exciting new features.

Compared to its predecessors, the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL, not much has changed visually. In general, the QHD + resolution display has grown to 5,5 inches for the Pixel 3 and 6,3 inches for the Pixel 3 XL. The dimensions have remained the same - thanks to the notch on the Pixel 3 XL. This allowed the display to grow without making the housing larger. The Pixel 3, on the other hand, has no notch, the display notch on the upper edge. Otherwise, both smartphones only differ in size and price.

Pixel 3 (XL): Smart and fast

At Google, everything is smart again this year. So there is now - probably the most popular feature in 2018 - a camera with artificial intelligence. With "Top Photo", the system shoots a few more after the actual snapshot and then suggests the probably better picture. Here the AI checks, for example, whether the person has opened their eyes or is laughing. With "Super Resolution Zoom" you should be able to take a picture without an additional lens in the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL Procan zoom. A test has to show whether it really works that reliably. The 12-megapixel camera on the back is also said to be the best smartphone camera of the year. Furthermore, there are two 8 megapixel lenses for selfies on the front.

The snapshots at night should also be a lot brighter than those of the competition, such as Apple with the iPhone Xs. In addition, a smart autofocus is presented, which can now automatically track objects and focus again and again when moving.

If you look at the hardware details, there is a Snapdragon 845 with 4 GB of RAM in both models. The internal memory is 64 or 128 GB. The battery also has a capacity of 2915 mAh and can now be charged using QI charging thanks to the new, complete glass back. When it comes to software, of course, Android 9 Pie is used and software updates are available for 3 years. Too bad: there is no longer a jack plug on both devices - USB-C headphones are included.

Pixel Stand: The charging dock for the Pixel

Since the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL are now equipped with a glass back for wireless charging, there was a dedicated QI charging dock today. If you put the pixel on the dock, you get the current charge level and the time on the display (always-on display). The price is 79 euros. Thanks to quick-charge technology, charging should also take place quickly wirelessly. The Pixel Stand is now available with the Google Pixel 3 (XL) in the Google Store ready for pre-order.

Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL: these are the prices

The Google Pixel 3 costs 64 euros (RRP) in the version with 849 GB of internal storage, while 128 GB costs 949 euros. In contrast, the cheapest variant of the Pixel 3 XL starts with 64 GB at 949 euros, or 1049 euros for 128 GB of storage. Both devices come to us in Germany and most likely also in Austria in the colors "Just Black", "Clearly White" and "Not Pink". Pre-orders are starting today in the Google Store possible, the first smartphones should be delivered in a month.

Where does the information come from that the Pixel 3 will also come to us in Austria? At the Google presentation there was no mention of Austria.

John S

The two predecessors were never officially in Austria, some dealers simply imported the devices.

Jonas Kalt

As soon as something is imported, it is also available for me in this country ...

John S

But not officially. You will then not receive any support from Google and in the case of Cyberport, for example, a warranty claim can last up to 4-6 weeks.

Jonas Kalt

No support from Google just because you are in another country? srsly? But why do I still run into so many people in Vienna with a pixel?

John S

Yes srsly. You only get "Contact" displayed in the pixel countries at the top right: https://support.google.com/pixelphone/answer/7109524?hl=de&ref_topic=7084203 -and if you talk to the support via VPN, they will only help you with a German address.

Jonas Kalt

Such a crap. This is disappointing.
Do you have a pixel yourself or why do you know that so well?
If so, generally satisfied with it? And is it also worth buying as an Austrian?

John S

Yes, I have the Pixel 2 and I love it, but I actually find the availability sad for a company like Google - and now in the 3rd generation.
I would only buy it if it is available again via Amazon, for example, in order to get a little better support

Jonas Kalt

Amazon shouldn't do that anyway Probe trouble. But Google is really sad about the availability of the Pixel and Google Home devices.

John S

Google Home and Google Home Mini are now available here, so I had hope but unfortunately nothing.

John S

It is better: https://support.google.com/store/answer/2462844?hl=en (the German version is not up-to-date), but still - we are in the EU, we don't speak any other language than in Germany - ergo the same support team can cover Austria and Google already sells devices here - so you should contact dealers it doesn't fail ..

Jonas Kalt

My question: What is really new now? Except the completely overpriced price for nothing?
