Sony presented two new smartphones at MWC 2018 in Barclona. Both should be in the high-end segment. Likewise, this year they are relying on a revised design. The trend towards narrow display bezels has not been ignored either.

Both smartphones are completely identical in terms of equipment and spec. Only the XZ2 Compact, as the name suggests, is more compact and therefore smaller. Unfortunately, this year the 3,5mm jack is no longer available. As an innovation, there is also the fingerprint sensor, instead of on the side, now on the back of both smartphones. You can't really see the classic Xperia design with the thin display bezels either.

Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact: That's what happens under the hood

The AMOLED display of the Xperia XZ2 measures 5,7 inches, whereas the XZ2 Compact is only 5 inches diagonally. What stands out: Both Xperia smartphones rely on narrow display bezels and the new 18: 9 aspect ratio this year. In addition, both smartphones have a FHD + resolution, which corresponds to a resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels. Furthermore one supports HDR. Under the hood you will find 4GB of RAM, together with the current Snapdragon 845 chipset. Thus, both smartphones are very well dedicated to the future and demanding games. There is certainly enough space for your own media and apps with 64GB of internal storage. If that's not enough, you can at least add up to 400GB. Micro-SD slots are built into both flagships.

The camera has a resolution of 19 megapixels in both smartphones. With this are just like Samsung's newest flagship Galaxy S9 Super slow motion videos in 960fps and full HD possible. The battery has a capacity of 3180 mAh, 480 mAh more than its predecessor, and can be charged wirelessly using the QI standard. Both smartphones also support QuickCharge 3.0 from Qualcomm. Since the jack connection has now also been omitted, a suitable USB-C to jack adapter is included. On the software side, both rely on the latest Android Oreo 8.0 with a Sony interface.

As a cool extra, both Sony Xperias have stereo speakers on the front. Especially held horizontally, this should bring a great sound when streaming videos and films. Both should also have a special vibration motor, which can vibrate appropriately during sound effects - you want to recreate the feeling of bass on a smartphone. However, like some of their predecessors, the smartphones are not waterproof.

Prices and availability
