Sony presented the new Sony Xperia XZ2018 at IFA 3. The new flagship comes with a new AI surface and new surround speakers.

The new Sony XZ3 is the new offshoot of the Xperia range from Sony. The flagship is equipped with some new changes. In addition, the smartphone will be shipped from the factory with Android 9.0 Pie.

These are the specs

The Sony Xperia XZ3 comes in a 6 inch QHD + OLED display with HDR. There is a special Netflix mode for better quality while streaming with Netflix. The main camera has a resolution of 19 megapixels, and the Sony Xperia XZ3 still does not use a dual camera. The front camera comes with a resolution of 13 megapixels, with a bokeh effect. 960 FPS slomo videos are also possible, but only in full HD resolution.

Inside is the Snapdragon 845, together with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal storage. There is also a battery with a capacity of 3300 mAh, which can be charged using quick charging. Wireless charging via Qi is also possible. The software runs the latest Android 9.0 Pie, which is also delivered ex works.

As an extra, the Sony Xperia XZ3 also has some functions on board: There are surround speakers with hi-res audio. Furthermore, the smartphone is waterproof according to IP68. There is also a frame that reacts to touch like the HTC U12 Plus. After tapping on the edge, the next app or certain actions should be suggested automatically using AI.

Preliminary conclusion

At the Sony event, the press had some time to showcase the Sony Xperia XZ3probeer Overall, the smartphone runs very smoothly and is comfortable to hold. The first tester of the super slomo function was rather sobering - the quality wasn't really convincing. Otherwise, Android 9.0 Pie has hardly changed and Google's stock software has been retained on the smartphone.

So far, I don't know what use tapping on the edge should have for suggestions for new apps and actions. It didn't work quite reliably in the first test either. A test report will clarify this shortly.

Prices and availability

The new Sony Xperia XZ3 offshoot should be available for pre-order from us from September. The new flagship is to be delivered from October. Also interesting: the price is based on the Sony Xperia XZ2 - this time it costs 799 euros for the market launch. There are also four colors (black, white / silver, green and red) to choose from.
