Spotify: Android widget says goodbye

Spotify tinkered with its own Android app once again. This time the home screen widget disappeared. What does that mean?

9to5Google was the first to notice the disappearance of the widget. For years, Spotify (like almost every other developer) offered a small widget for the start screen. Up until now, this could be used to control the current playback. The options forwards, backwards and play / pause were available for this. And now it has been taken out of the running in version 8.5 of the app. That means that from then on you can no longer place the mini player. If this is already on the home screen, it does not disappear, but it no longer works.

Spotify: widget is "unnecessary"

Spotify commented on this move in a blog post. It is written that by removing it, you want to make space for the playback controls in the notification center. It's been around at least as long as the widget, and it works exactly the same way. The change met with little enthusiasm among users. The reintroduction of the widget has currently already over 3.000 supporters, nevertheless a Spotify moderator assured that the widget will not come back for the time being. Let's see how things go on.
