Up until now, you had a free internet connection with you when you bought a Tesla. This is necessary, for example, so that the smart car can get various information about traffic and download updates directly from the Internet. Now it is announced that this is exactly what will cost in the future.

Not only the features mentioned above are possible with an Internet connection: streaming videos, karaoke, music streaming and much more also works in the Tesla with the Internet. This was made available free of charge until January 2020 - now it's over. So they will now introduce a subscription model for 10 dollars a month, which is due for the Internet connection. If you don't want to use the subscription, at least the navigation remains online for free.

Doesn't affect everyone

If you bought your Tesla before June 30, 2018, the connectivity to the Internet will still be available. In addition, it was announced in 2014 that it would charge money for this “premium” function in four years' time. As with most subscription models, you can first test it for 30 days free of charge - all users who are currently connected to the Internet will then be asked to check out in just under 30 days.

Tesla Premium subscription features

The subscription model will offer these advantages - entries marked with an asterisk will still be available with WLAN even without a subscription. (Screenshot: Electrek)

But if you get a hotspot and connect your Tesla to the WLAN, you can still use some services (marked with an asterisk in the table). These include video and music streaming, karaoke and the Internet browser, such as ELECTrek reported. The satellite view of the navigation and the live traffic simulation are reserved for premium customers. So it's not a bad move from Tesla - previously they lured customers with exactly these functions and now the free is an end. Most customers will probably book the subscription.
