Yesterday evening the big keynote of WWDC 2019 took place in San Jose. In addition to a lot of new software, there was also a lot of hardware on display. An overview.

Watch 6

The biggest change in advance: there is now a new, dedicated app store for the Apple Watch. This means that apps no longer have to be installed on the iPhone in order to be able to use them on the watch. There are app packages and suggestions in the new app store on the watch - manual searches are also possible.

Speaking of apps: There is now a separate book, memo and calculator app. I find it a bit unnecessary that the Siri request websites are displayed in full.

As a highlight there are some new health features again this year. The health app on the iPhone now provides a view of the user's trends. For example, it shows that you have been standing more lately and are generally on a better path in terms of health. For women it is now also possible to track the menstrual cycle. In addition, the watch now uses a microphone to listen to the ambient volume and informs the user when it gets too loud.

There was also a new Pride band and a corresponding watchface. In addition, watch faces can now only be displayed in white in mono mode. The final version of watchOS 6 will be released later this fall. Various betas have been available since yesterday.

TvOS 13

A few months ago, Apple showed off a new game streaming service called Apple Arcade at an event in May. This service is not only coming to iPhone, but also to iPad and Apple TV. To be able to play games properly on the latter console, tvOS 13 supports controllers from Microsoft and Sony. Furthermore, a new control center was introduced for easy switching between different users. This is also a new feature coming with tvOS 13. tvOS 13 will also be released in the fall. Since yesterday you can already use the developer beta probeer

iOS 13

Then it came to iOS 13. And yes, we finally have the long-awaited dark mode. This is used on the home screen, in the widgets and in various apps. If you activate this, all white areas in iOS are mostly completely black. Optionally, you can also set times for dark mode so that it is only active at night, for example.

Furthermore, Apple announced “Sign in with Apple”. This should be a privacy-oriented login feature. When logging in or registering, you choose which data you want to share with the relevant service. Among other things, you can create a private email address via which emails are forwarded to the actual address. This new function appears with every login form and with every registration.

Then there are some innovations in the multimedia area. If you listen to music with the AirPods, the same track can be heard with another iPhone user nearby. Another change affecting the AirPods is the ability to read out incoming messages. However, the app from which the notification comes must support this. If you own an Apple HomePod, it's now even easier to transfer the latest playlists to your device.

The new iOS version comes with the new iPhones in September. Betas have been available since yesterday.

iPadOS

During the presentation of iOS 13, the iPad was not mentioned. There was a reason for that, because a little later Apple showed iPadOS, which was specially developed for the tablet with the apple. This brings with it some changes that are particularly Pro-Users wished in the past.

The changes are already noticeable on the home screen. There are now not only more icons space, but also the current weather and some widgets. It continues with multitasking, with iPadOS it is possible to open several instances of an app in split-screen mode. The look of the multitasking view has also been changed a bit.

Further changes concern the file management and the handling of connected accessories. For the first time, USB sticks and hard drives appear in the new Files app so that the files can be managed from there. If you have a lot to do with editing photos, the editing tool of choice can be started when you connect a medium. For comparison: In iOS 12, only the Photos app opens, where the photos are available for viewing.

There are also some improvements for Safari. Apple promises better compatibility with web apps and keyboard shortcuts. In addition, a new download manager was introduced in order to find downloads quickly and easily.

The finished version of iPadOS will be released in September. Until then, the first betas can be madeprobe beer.

New Mac Pro and Pro DisplayXDR

Two years ago, Apple announced that it was working on a modular Mac Pro started. This was officially presented yesterday at WWDC 2019. After the Mac Pro from 2013 got bad feedback because of the lack of upgrade options, you lead with the new one Pro a new design. This allows easy replacement of internal components.

In the basic version (costs 5999 US dollars), an eight-core XeonProprocessor from Intel with 32 gigabytes of RAM and a 256 gigabyte SSD. The available options range up to a XeonProprocessor with 28 cores with 1,5 terabytes of RAM and a Radeon Pro Vega II graphics card. In addition, Apple developed its own card called "Afterburner", which is used for complex tasks such as cutting videos.

There is a new Apple display called Pro DisplayXDR. This Pro The display is 32 inches, a single Thunderbolt 3 cable is enough to transfer an image. This image is shown on the monitor in full 6K with 6016×3384 pixels. No other monitor on the market can offer something like this. Apple put a lot of effort into the design: there is almost no visible edge around the display. For the Pro Display XDR will charge Apple $4999. Pretty awesome.

macos catalina

Last, but not least: macOS Catalina with version number 10.15. With Catalina comes an event that we reported about in advance: The Death of iTunes. Instead, there are now three new ones Proprograms, namely music, podcasts and TV, which are intended to replace iTunes.

A new feature called "Sidecar" allows mirroring of the Mac to an iPad. This means that you no longer have to resort to third-party solutions, which in most cases even cost money. We already know another new function from the iPhones: screen time. In this way, the usage times of all Apple devices can be saved in one place. A word was also briefly said about,Project Marzipan”, which allows iPad apps to be ported to the Mac. This has been renamed "Catalyst" and will be further improved in the future.
