With the ID.7 Tourer, VW is finally bringing a fully electric station wagon to the road – with new software, plenty of space, and exciting differences from the ID.7 sedan. We'll explain everything else in this review.

tl;dr: A real station wagon from Wolfsburg, the Passat replacement

The VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S is not just an electric station wagon – it is VW's new benchmark in terms of space, comfort, and technology. With a range of over 600 km, modern software, high-quality materials, and a towing capacity of up to 1.000 kg, Volkswagen demonstrates what is possible today in the electric station wagon segment. In direct comparison to the ID.7 Sedan The Tourer offers significantly more trunk space and practicality without sacrificing ride comfort or efficiency. And even though many see it as the successor to the Passat, it feels much more like an electric Arteon – elegant, dynamic, and with high-quality workmanship. VW has outdone itself here and finally delivered a car that can be recommended almost without hesitation. The quality is good, it's a joy to drive, and the new software finally works the way you'd expect from a modern car.

Design: ID.Design, but in normal?

The VW ID.7 Tourer Pro S features the typical, modern VW design, combining clean lines and an aerodynamic shape. It's no coincidence that it achieves a drag coefficient of just 0,24 Compared to the sedan, the Tourer appears significantly more practical thanks to its longer roofline and larger rear end, without sacrificing any elegance. The flowing transitions and the understated, yet high-quality design underscore its claim to be a high-quality station wagon. Particularly striking are the narrow LED lights at the front and rear; our test car was equipped with the IQ.Light Matrix LED system. The rims are "smaller" due to the increased emphasis on efficiency. Overall, the ID.7 Tourer not only appears functional, but also contemporary and sophisticated – a true statement for VW's electric future. It's not for nothing that the station wagon is already a fairly common sight on German roads.

Interior: Quality back to its old level

The interior of the ID.7 Tourer Pro S stands out noticeably from its predecessors; the quality of the materials is noticeably better, and there are no more annoying creaking noises. Everything appears robust and well-crafted, giving the vehicle a solid and durable feel. The only downside is the piano lacquer finish, which, while elegant, remains prone to fingerprints and scratches. The large 15-inch infotainment screen is particularly impressive: It runs smoothly, responds quickly, and is finally much more intuitive to use than in older ID models like the ID.3. The ambient lighting, with its playful design, sets accents and creates a pleasant, balanced lighting atmosphere during nighttime driving. This simply looks good and underlines the feel-good ambience in the interior.

Infotainment: ID.Software 5.2+ ensures peace of mind

The new ID.Software 5.2+ in the ID.7 Tourer Pro S, as in the sedan, finally takes a major leap forward: The user interface runs significantly smoother and more modern than in previous models. The larger 15-inch screen supports simpler and more intuitive operation, making many functions faster to access. The system offers a wide selection of apps, including a relaxation program for breaks and numerous games like Pac-Man – ideal for short entertainment while charging. However, streaming services are still missing, which is a shame, especially on long journeys, as they prevent optimal use of charging breaks for media consumption.

Loading route planning: Topography is taken into account

The electric route planning in the ID.7 Tourer Pro S has been significantly improved and now also takes the route's topography into account. This makes charging planning much more realistic and user-friendly, as inclines and declines are incorporated into the range calculation. In addition, automatic and manual battery preconditioning ensures that the vehicle is always at the optimal temperature for charging at maximum power. This shortens charging times and makes driving more efficient. Unfortunately, there is still no sign of a reasonable way to filter by provider in the system. Especially in these times when prices are not regulated by law, this is a must in our opinion.

Sound system: Harman/Kardon with the highest surround sound quality

The Harman Kardon sound system in the ID.7 Tourer Pro S impresses across the board, placing it in the top league in terms of quality. Subjectively compared to the sound systems of Volvo or BMW, Volkswagen's setup is definitely one of the best Harman Kardon systems currently available in a production car. The sound is clear, powerful, and rich in detail, which will especially delight music lovers. Whether playing quiet background music or playing at full volume, the system always delivers a rich and balanced sound experience that significantly enhances driving pleasure.

Driving behavior & range: Long-distance station wagon without major disadvantages

The handling of the ID.7 Tourer Pro S is essentially virtually identical to that of the sedan – I didn't notice any noticeable differences during the test. The adaptive suspension with Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) ensures that bumps and road damage are transmitted very smoothly to the interior, significantly increasing ride comfort. For sportier drivers, the suspension can be set to a firmer setting, making handling even more direct. In summer temperatures, proRanges of 550 kilometers are possible without any problems, on the highway you can also manage in summer effortlessly 500 kilometersIn winter, the range drops to about 450 kilometers, but remains within the expected range. Fuel consumption in our test was between 17 and 21 kWh pro 100 km, which is perfectly acceptable given the size and space of the vehicle. Overall, the Tourer offers a balanced combination of comfort, range, and driving dynamics.

Thanks to the charging capacity of up to 200 kW and an average charge of 160 kW, you can get back on your feet very quickly after a short rest break. The massage in the Ergo-Comfort seats ensures that the driver and passenger are always relaxed – they are unparalleled. Not even a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes EQS can compete.

Has the Passat been ousted from its throne?

The ID.7 Tourer Pro S has definitely outperformed the last-generation Passat in terms of comfort. While we haven't had the chance to test the new Passat ourselves yet, according to a VW executive, the ID.7, especially the Tourer version, is selling significantly better than the current Passat. We understand this, as the ID.7 simply has a more impressive design – it appears more modern and elegant. The Tourer is also slightly longer than the new Passat, which provides additional interior space and comfort. The Passat B9 E-Hybrid offers a realistic electric range of around 110 kilometers and charges up to 50 kW via DC CCS, which is sufficient for many users.

However, the PHEV drive with its two drive systems also carries risks: Small batteries are often fully charged, which can accelerate battery aging, and repairs tend to be more expensive due to the more complex technology. The latter was also noted by the EVClinic This was impressively demonstrated by a company specializing in the diagnosis and repair of electric vehicles. Overall, the ID.7 Tourer demonstrates that Volkswagen is a step ahead with its all-electric models, not only in terms of comfort and design, but also in terms of future viability.
