Super Mario Run: This is how the update plays
It happened a year ago. At the keynote for the iPhone 7 (Plus), Nintendo surprisingly dared to jump into the app store with Super Mario Run. Half a year later, the game conquered the Playstore on Android devices. On September 28th and 29th all players got the first big update. This is all new.

Welcome screen: Completely new
You will notice the first change immediately when you open the game after a completed update. Instead of the running plumber alone, we now see Mario doing a handstand on a gumba. The positions and fonts of the texts have also changed a bit. The Nintendo logo moved from the top left to the top right, the Super Mario Run lettering is now slightly rotated in the upper left area, the waiting text is a bit below and the Touch screen! Text has got one of the typical Nintendo fonts.
In addition, a completely new entry has made it to the start screen: You can now access the new one directly and without detours 10 Remix Start mode, which I will come to later. The background colors of the welcome screen all stayed the same.
kingdom
Nintendo does not have the look of the kingdom as strong as the start screen again. A few things were changed here anyway. A yellow tube now appears at the bottom left, which is for the 10 Remix Mode is intended. From my point of view, the tube is completely out of place there, but I guess that's just a matter of taste. This change was at the expense of the button for the game's menu, which is why it can now be found at the top left. That means in the same breath that the button also had to change its position to play with friends. This can now be found at the top right.
Suddenly a toad with headphones is sitting in the lower right corner of the kingdom. You can use it to deactivate the game's music and listen to your own songs. A nice visual bonus: if you deactivate the game music via this toad, the character you are currently playing with gets headphones with your own trademark attached.
The new game mode: Remix 10
Remix 10 is the first new game mode added to Super Mario Run. It is always divided into ten short level excerpts, which you have to complete with the figure given there, which is mostly Mario.
Toad Rally levels as well as excerpts from the standard worlds can come as levels. One has pro Level only one life, if you die you have not passed the level, but you still get to the next level. After every ten levels you have completed a level and only have to complete the bonus level, where you can win items for your kingdom.
The aim of the mode is to complete all areas. Because in the end a completely new character awaits you, who you have to unlock: Princess Daisy. It is also worth mentioning that playing Remix takes 10 Toad Ralley tickets. There is also the possibility of collecting special coins during the game, which you can use to get back to the bonus level. There you can also get items for your kingdom again.
The new world: world of stars
Basically nothing has changed in the worlds. The existing levels are all the same length and the colored coins can also be found in the same place. You will only see the Super Mario star with your eyes in the lower center. Via it one arrives at the world of stars.
The star world is only available after defeating Bowser in his castle in world 6. Then another nine levels await you there, in each of which there are three five colored coins to collect. The whole thing has only one catch: you have to unlock the levels in the star world again with given tasks. And these tasks are not easy to complete.
I currently only have one level available for which I had to defeat Bowser with Peach. In my opinion, that was comparatively the easiest.
Game experience: New enemies
With the update, Nintendo has also added new enemies to the levels. So far I only noticed that there are spiders and new gumbas in my currently unlocked level in the star world.
I also found it good that Yoshi and Co. now also get bigger due to the red mushroom and can also shrink again when they come into contact with enemies. Up until now that was only possible with Mario. As mentioned before, the characters are still put on headphones while playing, provided that the app's music is deactivated. The rest of the game experience is completely the same.
Conclusion
Super Mario Run has never been a game that I opened every time I picked up my phone. For me it currently serves much more as a pastime on the way to school and at stops for train and bus. I'm afraid that won't change despite the update. Nevertheless, I am happy that I now have a little more to do with Remix 10 and the world of stars than before. The fact that there is now Princess Daisy to unlock or that new enemies are waiting in the levels of the star world has left me rather cold.
Super Mario Run can still be downloaded for free from the Playstore and the Appstore. In order to be able to play all levels of the game, you usually have to pay ten euros. The full version is available until October 12th for around five euros.
