Apple keynote: WWDC 2016 at a glance

On Monday was Apple's WWDC, where, among other things, a new iOS and macOS Sierra were presented. Of course there was more that was presented. We have put everything together for you in this article.

Right at the beginning of the keynote: Commemoration of the victims of the Orlando massacre

Tim Cook begins with a minute's silence to commemorate the 49 victims of the attack the day before yesterday. This act of solidarity has never been shown at any other technology keynote and we were very impressed!

Start with a little statistic

The WWDC (World Wide Developer Conference) went into the 27th round with over 5.000 attendees from 74 countries, of which 72% were there for the first time. In addition, 120 underage participants were present, the youngest of whom was 9 years old. Cook was also proud to have distributed 350 grants. The highlight of the statistics was the App Store, which so far gives 13 million developers the opportunity to offer their 2 million apps with over 130 billion downloads.

Watch 3

watchOS 3 is said to have many improvements compared to its predecessor, including writing messages by "painting" the letters and making suggestions for emojis. Another improvement is the simpler and tidier interface, which, among other things, makes it easier to change the new watch faces. User safety was also considered, because an SOS feature will be implemented, which will presumably send the location to the auxiliary control center.

Work has also been done in the area of fitness. Activities can now be shared with friends and received at the same time, but the measurement options have also been upgraded. This gives wheelchair users new possibilities to monitor their activities. In addition to Activity, the most popular app for the Apple Watch, a new app has now also been introduced: Breathe. This app should help the user to relax through various breathing exercises.

A preview is available for those interested Developer for download ready.

tvOS

More than 6000 apps and 1300 video channels are already available for Apple TV and Siri can now search through them thanks to the improved search. Another innovation for the next Apple TV update is the Darkmode, which colors your surface in a more pleasant gray in the dark. Another innovation is the end of multiple logins. One login is now sufficient for several services and one does not have to log into each service individually. A synchronization between iPhone and Apple TV has also been integrated, which, if available, also installs the downloaded apps from the iPhone on the Apple TV.

macOS (previously OS X)

Probably the most getting used to change to OS X is the name. It changes from the well-known OS X to macOS, but that doesn't necessarily have to be bad. The newest (first?) Version is called Sierra and contains some nice features. This includes, for example, the auto login when an Apple Watch or an iPhone is close to the Mac or the universal clipboard, i.e. the universal clipboard between iPhone and Mac. What many will probably be happy about is the integration of Siri, which can, for example, carry out contextual searches when creating presentations, which can then be inserted using drag & drop. Also in the notification area, hand has been made, because this shines in new splendor similar to iOS 9.

Apple iCloud

Not much has been said about iCloud, but what has been said is not entirely without it. 150 GB are now available for free use and files that are rarely used should be automatically deleted from now on. Practically!

Apple Pay

Yes, mobile payment is such a thing in Germany and Austria and that will probably not change anytime soon, nevertheless there seems to be good news for Switzerland and France, which in addition to the USA, Great Britain, Canada, Australia, China and Singapore will soon be able to pay with your Apple device in selected shops. We are also working on a solution for shopping with Apple Pay on the web, we are excited when and how we can experience it for ourselves!

iOS 10

iOS was apparently Apple's biggest construction site in the past year, because a lot of innovations await us there. Notifications such as Android Lollipop are completely displayed on the lock screen and not just a link to the corresponding app; widgets are now also available for the lock screen. A nice feature to get to the lock screen is to simply lift the iPhone. In my opinion, this will annoy some users due to the increased battery consumption in the case of false detection, but I think that Apple is aware of this and is adapting the algorithm accordingly.

apple photos

A new, intelligent algorithm has also been added to the internal gallery app, which divides your images into people, places and objects.

Maps

Apple Maps also received minor improvements, such as showing the traffic on a route.

Apple Music

Here, too, Apple has been hard at work and has given the app for iOS and mac a new design that I think is successful. It remains to be seen when Android will get a new design. But what will probably make the Apple Music subscribers happy the most: song lyrics!

News

A rather uninteresting app for us because it is not yet available from us. Nevertheless, a few information: News was introduced last year and has now also been given a new design, which now offers clear sections and offers content based on reading habits. In addition, subscriptions and notifications on current and important topics have now been introduced. A good alternative to the publication in Germany / Austria is probably Google Play Kiosk.

Apple Home

After Google's appearance at its developer conference last month and the introduction of Google Home, Apple is now following suit, well, Apple Home. In this case, however, it is only an app and not an extra device, still uninteresting without a smart home.

Apple iMessage

Calling or missing calls has become more convenient. Missed calls are now displayed as a voicemail in iMessage. But there are also innovations in the design that are not too new to us: enlarged / reduced speech bubbles, decorating / painting pictures and enlarged emojis.

Swift Playgrounds

Apple wants everyone to do that with Swift Playgrounds, which will be available for free on the Store this fall Programming with Swift, Apple's Proprogramming language for apps, bring closer, even to the little ones. It's a good idea in itself, but it remains to be seen whether it will ultimately be very popular.

You can read our WWDC live ticker here in peace.

What do you like the most? What do you say? Do you think Swift Playgrounds is really interesting for kids too? Write it in the comments!
