Snapchat employees are said to have misused an internal tool for data retrieval. It should have been common for some employees to simply view user data for their own benefit.

Who Motherboard (VICE) opposite is reported, some employees are said to have read data from some users. With the help of internal software you should have gotten some data. This includes, for example, the location of the user, images and videos saved in the chat, telephone numbers and e-mail addresses. The internal tool "SnapLion" is normally used to release data for official inquiries.

Access possible for no real reason

So one is said to have used this tool without any real reason. For example, you should have read out data from users for your own purposes. Former and current employees report to "Motherboard" that a corresponding Protocollation was said to have been insufficient a few years ago. However, the report does not indicate when these accesses are said to have taken place. The exact number of queries is also unknown.

Many departments have access to it on Snapchat

Many departments at Snapchat are currently supposed to have access to this tool. But it should also be used for “useful” purposes. For example, for actions such as restoring accounts in the event of hacking or other support inquiries. Departments against abuse and bullying should also have access to the tool.

A spokesman for the company has now commented on this incident. "Any knowledge that employees would spy on our community is very worrying and completely wrong." Employees who illegally access this data should be fired immediately from Snapchat, according to the spokesman. Currently one should also have taken some measures against abuse. So you save only a little user data (not necessarily to be taken seriously) and have strict guidelines for data access.

In general, Snapchat seems to have some Proproblems with data security and support. I have my experiences where support suddenly (inadvertently) gave me access to someone else's account after a request to restore a hacked account in my column already described.
