The Jeep Wrangler. Hardly any other name evokes such a strong desire for adventure, untouched wilderness, and ultimate freedom on four wheels. But the world keeps turning, and even the most hardened icons must keep up with the times. With the Wrangler 4xe Rubicon, Jeep is straddling the gap between legendary off-road capability and the demands of the electrified age. A plug-in hybrid drive in one of the most puristic off-road vehicle in the world – can this work? We spent weeks testing the part-time electric car on and off-road, torturing it through the urban jungle, and pushing it to its limits in its natural habitat, the rough terrain.

The history of the Jeep Wrangler is inextricably linked to its ancestor, the Willys MB. This was introduced in 1941 as a robust and light four-wheel drive vehicle It was designed for the US Army during World War II, becoming a legend. After the war, the concept was adapted for the civilian market with the "Civilian Jeep" (CJ) models and further developed over decades. In 1987, the first official "Wrangler" (YJ generation) was finally introduced, placing greater emphasis on everyday usability without sacrificing its core off-road capabilities. The Wrangler has been continuously modernized through the TJ generation (from 1997, returning to the classic round headlights), JK generation (from 2007, available for the first time as a four-door "Unlimited"), and the current JL generation (since 2018).

Today, the Jeep Wrangler represents more than ever the balance between tradition and modernity. current JL generation, which received a facelift in 2024 with a new grille and a modernized cockpit including a large touchscreen, retains its iconic design with removable doors and roof. At the same time, electrification has taken hold: In Europe, the Wrangler is offered primarily as a plug-in hybrid with the "4xe" suffix, which enables all-electric driving and further enhances off-road capabilities thanks to the instant torque of the electric motor. With updates planned for the coming years and an all-new generation, including an all-electric version, possibly arriving as early as 2028, the Wrangler remains one of the Jeep brand's core models and a symbol of adventure and freedom.

TL;DR (Conclusion) on the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Comprouncompromising off-road professional in modern hybrid guise

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon is a fascinating vehicle that combines the legendary off-road capability of the Wrangler with modern hybrid technology. 380 hp system power and 637 Nm torque It offers impressive performance both on and off-road. Gliding silently in pure electric mode is a completely new, almost surreal experience in a Wrangler. Furthermore, thanks to the electric motor's regenerative braking, it's surprisingly comfortable to drive. Particularly noteworthy is the fact that, despite the additional weight of the hybrid components, the 4xe not only maintains but even improves its legendary off-road capabilities. The instant torque delivery of the electric motor is particularly noticeable when scrambling over rocks and in difficult terrain.

But the 4xe is no eco-miracle. Its electric range is modest at 40 kilometers, and fuel consumption with a full battery averages 10,5 liters. pro 100 kilometers is impressive. In addition, there is the high entry-level price of 83.500 euros for the 4xe Rubicon. However, it is strong in character, incredibly capable, and exudes a charm that is hard to resist. This makes it an expensive toy for adults that manages the balancing act between two worlds surprisingly well without selling its soul. It remains apromiss, which is ideal for those who travel short electric distances every day and seek ultimate freedom off the beaten track at the weekend.

  • The pure E-mode enables a completely new nature experience off-road and relaxed, emission-free cruising in the city.

  • The “Max Regeneration” function allows for a pleasant driving experience and protects the brakes.

  • Switchable all-wheel drive, low-range gearing, lockable differentials, and a decoupleable front stabilizer are a statement.

  • Authentic Wrangler design with loving details and references to the Willys MB.

❌ Weaknesses:

  • The purchase price is rather high at at least 83.500 euros.

  • When the battery is empty, the fuel consumption is high, exceeding 12 liters.

  • Sensitive Lane Departure Warning.

Design and exterior of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Iconic, practical, good

Even at first glance, the Wrangler 4xe Rubicon leaves no doubt about its heritage. It's a rolling homage to its forebears, most notably the Willys Jeep of the 1940s. The silhouette, with its external door hinges, nearly vertical windshield, and flared fenders, remains unchanged and unmistakable. The seven vertical slits in the grille, a hallmark for ages, flank the classic round headlights, which now feature bright LED technology. Another nice detail are the small, embossed silhouettes of the Willys Jeep, which can be found in various places, such as the wheel rims and the headlights – a loving reference to its own history.

Our test car in the 4xe Rubicon trim in the color “Anvil” underlines its claim as an off-road leader with coarse-tread BFGoodrich off-road tires on 17-inch rims, a beefier front bumper and a striking “Rubicon” logo on the hood, which is supported by two proThe blue accents (“Electric Blue”) on the 4xe and Trail-Rated logos, the “Rubicon” lettering, and the tow hooks are subtle but clear references to the plug-in hybrid drive. The tailgate, which is prominent on the front left fender, immediately reveals the part-time electric car.

Particularly worth mentioning is the ability to remove the doors and windshield as well as the roof – a unique feature that makes the Wrangler the only four-door convertible The configurator also offers other open-air options: a soft top, two hardtops, a Sunrider for the hardtop, and an exclusive Sky One-Touch Powertop.

Interior of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Rustic and functional

Getting into the Wrangler is more like climbing. You sit on high-positioned, comfortable nappa leather seats, which offer sufficient comfort for long trips but lack lateral support during fast cornering. The driver's seat can be electrically adjusted in up to twelve directions, ensuring optimal ergonomics. There's a lot of hard plastic, which makes perfect sense in a car where you're potentially exposed to mud and dust. The robust interior materials are designed for off-road use and can even be cleaned with a garden hose if necessary. Drain plug in the floor make it possible.

The power windows aren't located in the doors—they're removable, after all—but in the center console. The ergonomics are designed for functionality. Large buttons and dials, operable even with gloves, dominate the design. Unique and distinctive to the Rubicon is the red strip in the center console, which houses the switches for the differential locks and the detachable stabilizer bar.

Comfort: Significant improvement

Compared to previous Wrangler generations, the comfort level has been significantly improved. Power windows, central locking, and keyless entry are now standard on all trim levels. The available dual-zone automatic climate control ensures pleasant temperatures, although the convertible experience naturally presents its own climatic challenges.

Comfort features also include heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, which are especially appreciated during the cold season. My Uconnect app It also enables remote control of important vehicle functions: locking and unlocking doors, locating the vehicle, adjusting the climate control, and monitoring charging processes. The My eCharge feature manages charging and even allows payment at public charging stations.

Space and storage space: Plenty of space

The driver and front passenger are very spacious, and visibility is good. The rear compartment is a bit cramped, making access a bit difficult. Nevertheless, the rear seat offers ample room for three people, although the upright seating position in the rear takes some getting used to.

Due to the 17,3 kWh battery located under the rear seat, the loading floor in the trunk is unfortunately no longer completely flat when the seats are folded down. The trunk volume remains 548 to 2050 liters but uncompromising and practical. The lockable storage compartments in the center console are particularly practical. They offer a secure place for valuables, even when the car is open and the doors are removed. The various compartments and pockets in the doors are thoughtfully positioned and underscore the practical character of the vehicle.

Infotainment in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Finally big

The heart of the infotainment is the Uconnect 5 system with a 12,3-inch display. The graphics may not be the most brilliant on the market, but the system responds quickly and intuitively. It offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and can be customized. A 7-inch TFT display behind the steering wheel also provides information about the battery charge level and electric range. Up to 100 different display options allow for comprehensive personalization.

Particularly impressive are the off-road pages, which display detailed information on lean angle, engine speed, and even tire pressure. Specific hybrid displays also provide information on energy flow, charge level, and electric range. Another highlight are the integrated Trails Offroad trail guides, featuring more than 62 official Jeep Badge of Honor routes and detailed descriptions.

Connectivity and sound: Modern features

A TomTom navigation system with live traffic information and over-the-air updates is available as an option. Two phones can be connected simultaneously via Bluetooth. The generously distributed USB ports in the front and rear ensure that all passengers can charge their devices. A 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot provides internet connectivity for up to eight devices. The included Jeep 4xe Power Box also offers four 230-volt outlets for powering external devices such as phones and tablets.

The audio system varies depending on the trim level. Higher trim levels are equipped with premium sound systems. Premium sound system from Alpine with nine speakers and 552 watts provides a rich sound that even at higher speeds and with the roof open against the proThe system, however, offers too little bass and a rather flat, tinny sound. The tuning here doesn't seem to have been optimized yet. The voice control, however, works reliably and supports both the vehicle functions and the navigation.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon drivetrain: Impressive system performance

Next to the Land Rover Defender With the 110 P300e, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe is currently the only off-roader with a plug-in hybrid drive. The most exciting component of the 4xe is therefore under the hood. A 2,0-liter four-cylinder turbo gasoline engine with 272 hp and 400 Nm is supported by two electric motors. The larger electric motor produces 134 hp and 245 Nm, the smaller 44 hp and 53 Nm. The result is an impressive system output of 380 hp and a maximum torque of 637 Nm. On the road, this means that the Wrangler 4xe delivers astonishingly powerful acceleration despite its weight of almost 2,5 tons. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in around 6,5 seconds is impressive for a vehicle of this caliber. However, the top speed is limited to 156 km/h.

In hybrid mode, the combustion engine and electric motor usually work together unobtrusively and harmoniously. However, you can also drive purely on electric power. Then the colossus glides almost silently through the city, which is an almost surreal experience. "Electric" mode can be forced at the touch of a button, as long as the battery has enough juice. The "E-Save" mode, on the other hand, allows you to save the battery charge for later or recharge it while driving using the combustion engine, which of course makes little energy sense. The TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission does a good job, usually switching imperceptibly between modes.

Driving dynamics and handling: Made more for off-road than road use

The handling of the Wrangler 4xe is typical Wrangler—with all the advantages and disadvantages that come with it. While the solid axles front and rear provide legendary off-road capability, they result in a somewhat unstable ride on the road. Furthermore, the steering, designed for off-road use, is indirect and offers little feedback on the road. In fast corners, the high body leans noticeably to one side, and the knobby tires feel somewhat imprecise on asphalt. The turning circle of 12,3 meters is very good compared to the competition.

At highway speeds, the vehicle is quite stable, but tends to stagger, requiring steering adjustments. The BFGoodrich tires offer excellent off-road grip, but generate noticeable road noise on asphalt. Above 120 km/h, wind noise from the angular body and the removable roof panels increases significantly.

The instant torque of the electric motors, on the other hand, is particularly noticeable when starting off and at low speeds. A particularly positive feature is the maximum recuperation level, which can be activated at the push of a button. The Wrangler then decelerates so sharply when you lift off the accelerator that the brakes are barely needed. This creates a true "one-pedal driving" experience, contributing to a relaxed drive while simultaneously recovering energy while preserving the brakes.

Off-road characteristics of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Excellent performance

Off-road, the Wrangler 4xe Rubicon truly shines. This is where it's at home. This is where it's a master of its craft. As soon as the asphalt ends, the seemingly lumbering giant transforms into a nimble mountain goat. The Rock-Trac 4x4 all-wheel-drive system with a short off-road ratio (4:1) and electronically engageable front and rear differential locks provides maximum traction. The crawl ratio of up to 77,2:1 makes even the most difficult terrain negotiable. A massive gearshift lever allows you to choose between rear-wheel drive (2H), automatic all-wheel drive (4H Auto), permanent all-wheel drive (4H Part-Time), and low-range (4L).

The differentials on the front and rear axles can be fully locked, and the front anti-roll bar can be electronically decoupled (sway bar). This allows for extreme axle articulation, allowing the wheels to maintain contact with the ground even in the deepest terrain. With ground clearance of over 100 centimeters and a fording depth of 25 centimeters, it is also suitable for deep water crossings.

Especially in electric mode, the Off-road experience revolutionizedThe precise torque distribution and virtually silent operation open up entirely new dimensions for exploring nature. The Trail-Rated certification isn't just a marketing gimmick, but is backed up by impressive technical specifications: 36,6 degrees approach angle, 31,8 degrees rear, and 21,4 degrees breakover angle.

Fuel consumption and range of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: It can be even better

Fuel consumption depends heavily on the accelerator pedal. On average, we 9,5 to 11 liters of super per 100 kilometers with a fully charged battery This is quite acceptable for an off-roader in this category. However, if you constantly use full power, don't charge the battery, and tow heavy trailers, you should expect fuel consumption of over 12 liters. In pure electric mode, consumption is approximately 26,6 kWh/100 km.

The 17,3 kWh lithium-ion battery with 400-volt technology enables a purely electric range of up to 40 kilometers in mixed driving. In the city, up to 50 kilometers is possible. That may sound modest, but it's sufficient for most daily commutes. Combined with the somewhat small 65-liter fuel tank, this results in a total range of up to 600 kilometers.

Charging with the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Sufficient for the small battery

Charging the Wrangler 4xe is straightforward, as the charging port is conveniently located above the front left fender, making it easy to reach. The Wrangler 4xe is charged with a single-phase maximum 7,4 kWUsing a suitable wallbox or public charging station, the battery should be fully charged in under three hours. However, in our test, the Wrangler only achieved charging speeds of 11 kW at 4,5 kW stations because only one phase is used. The charging time was therefore three hours and 40 minutes.

Charging took about eight hours using a standard household socket (2,3 kW). DC fast charging isn't supported, but given the small battery, that's not really necessary.

Assistance systems and safety in the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon: Significant improvement

The Wrangler 4xe Rubicon is equipped with a comprehensive package of over 85 available security and protection features Standard equipment includes a rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. The adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function works reliably and can brake the vehicle to a standstill.

Traction control and electronic stability control with electronic rollover mitigation are standard on all models. The lane departure warning system can be a bit sensitive at times, as we noticed in real-life driving. The collision warning, on the other hand, works reliably and can automatically brake in emergencies. The off-road-specific systems are particularly useful, such as the off-road camera with front and rear views, which can be cleared with a single click on the Rubicon. It ensures maximum precision under all driving conditions.

Warranty and price of the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon

But the electric fun also comes at a price. In Germany, the Jeep Wrangler 4xe Rubicon starts at around €83.500, the Sahara at €81.500. With a few extras, the €85.000 mark is quickly reached. However, in return, you get extensive equipment and maximum off-road capabilities. Combustion engine counterpart without electric motor and battery starts at 71.900 euros. Compared to the Ford Bronco Badlands, which starts at €69.950 and offers similar off-road capabilities, the 4xe is comparatively expensive. The first used examples of the 4xe from about 40.000 Available in euros. (All prices are as of August 2025 and include 19% VAT.)

Jeep offers a four-year warranty consisting of a two-year manufacturer's warranty and a two-year extended warranty with no mileage restrictions. The paint warranty runs for two years, and the corrosion perforation warranty runs for seven years. The high-voltage battery has an eight-year or 160.000-kilometer warranty. Overall, it's a solid one.
