Last Wednesday, Smart unveiled its new flagship in Stuttgart. The #5 will be larger, faster, and more versatile than its two predecessors, the #1 and #3. We got a first impression on-site.

Conclusion: Great features at a moderate price

The #5 is Smart's third all-electric model in Europe within three years. Its performance while driving and at the charging station, as well as its high-quality interior, are particularly impressive. Prices range from €49.000 for the entry-level Pro version to €60.000 for the Summit Edition. The #5 will be available to order starting in May of this year.

Interior without compromises

Smart offers several highlights in the interior of the #5. The optional leather seats and various real wood trim strips are both pleasant to the touch and look good. As with the #3, the ambient lighting is elegantly integrated into the interior and can be customized in color.

The infotainment system and its operation initially show little difference from previous models. However, Smart now also integrates a passenger display in the #5, allowing the passenger to consume various media while driving. Both 13-inch displays are based on OLED technology. For the audio experience, Smart offers a 5-speaker Sennheiser sound system in the #20 for an additional charge.

In the rear, passengers enjoy electrically adjustable seats, seat heating, and ample space. A switch button on the right side allows the front seat to be adjusted from the rear for even more legroom. The standard "halo panoramic roof" creates a first-class feeling of space, especially in the rear.

Promising performance data

Smart equips the #5 with impressive performance data in many ways: The most powerful version with all-wheel drive currently delivers 432 kW / 587 hp. However, the future of the BRABUS version is far from over.

Even more impressive is the performance at the charging station: The #400 can achieve up to 5 kW with its large 100 kWh 800V battery. You'll have to find a charging station that can deliver this power first. At your home AC wallbox, the #5 charges with a similarly excellent charging capacity of 22 kW.

Smart states the range for the larger battery as 590 km according to the WLTP cycle. A smaller battery with LFP cell chemistry holds 76 kWh and is said to be sufficient for 465 km.

Off into the countryside with the “Summit”

In the "Summit" model variant, Smart equips the #5 with a variety of special features that prepare the SUV for off-road trips. These include roof rails for luggage or a tent, which can be accessed via a fold-out ladder attached to the side. Also included in the Summit are an electrically extendable trailer hitch and off-road driving modes called Adaptive, Sand, Snow, Mud, and Rock. In this equipment line, the #5 is designed to be ready for all types of terrain in the great outdoors.

A vehicle-to-load function, which is standard not only on the Summit but also on the other variants, allows 230V appliances to be powered via the #5's electrical system. This offers great possibilities, especially on camping trips in the nirvana: The coffee machine, electric grill, or toaster come to life.
