Contact lenses with zoom function could soon become a reality

Who has not wished to zoom into the distance to see things enlarged and that without binoculars, cell phones or lenses - incognito, so to speak? In this article we introduce a zoomable contact lens.

Scientists at the University of California San Diego have the solution. It is a soft robotic lens with which one triggers an "electro-oculagraphic signal" by double blinking, which in turn triggers a zoom effect. The zoom is actually quite simple: the lens changes shape and thus deforms the incident light. The result works like a zoom.

The zoomable contact lens for the future?

But how can something like that work? Here the more detailed explanation. In any case, the lens does not require a battery or other components to perform the zoom. As a result, the zoomable contact lens looks like any normal lens and is therefore not noticeable. However, if you think that you can observe the stars with this lens, I will unfortunately have to disappoint you. The desired object of desire can only be enlarged by a maximum of 32%. Since today's perfectly normal glass lenses already achieve this value, the zoom value is not particularly spectacular. But this innovation, which will certainly continue to develop, is already worth mentioning in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I have to disappoint everyone who wants to get this 007 gadget now. The zoomable contact lens is still in the development phase. So it will be a while before it is available from our optician around the corner. I am very excited about this new technology and am just waiting to find it in other gadgets as well.
