Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport review: Better and more expensive than its predecessor

With the Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport, Sennheiser presented erneut a companion for workouts. In this test report I will tell you what experiences I was able to gain with it.
tl; dr: With the compact design of the earplugs and the robust case as well as the integration with Polar and other sports apps and gadgets, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport fit perfectly into your own sports routine. They also offer solid sound quality including active noise cancellation. There is room for improvement in terms of battery life, the reliability of the touch controls and the suppression of wind in ANC mode.
If you compare it with that MOMENTUM TrueWireless 4, I would consider the extra charge if you know that you will benefit from the additional robustness and integrations profit.

Unboxing and initial setup
The MOMENTUM Sport come in a compact package similar to the MOMENTUM True Wireless 4. Visually, it looks like other Sennheiser products, with the only exception that a Polar logo has been printed on it. The delivery includes the in-ears in the case, a USB-A to C cable, two additional pairs of silicone plugs, two additional pairs of wings and a small loop. Here again, I have to say that I would have preferred it if Sennheiser had included a double-sided USB-C cable. I would also have liked an additional pair of plugs.
The initial setup is child's play. You plug the case into the power supply and then insert the in-ears into your ear. They then immediately appear in the settings of the playback device. Detailed instructions for the process are also available in the manufacturer's Smart Control app.
Design, workmanship and comfort
Visually, the Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport are very different from other products in the company's portfolio. They come in three different colors, namely black, gray and green. I was sent the gray color option, which is mainly a touch lighter than the black version.
The charging case is shaped like a puck, is largely rubberized and has a very robust feel in the hand. According to Sennheiser, it is also officially shockproof. The only disadvantage of the rubber coating is that traces of grease are quickly visible. The case has two special features: It has a recess for attaching the loop included in the scope of delivery and the USB-C port on the front is protected by a rubber cover. This means the case is protected according to IPX4. The lid is not held by a hinge, but by a rubber band. This means that it doesn't always close perfectly if you just close it with a hand movement. Last but not least, it should be mentioned that wireless charging is supported.
The in-ears are very compact and have a rounded shape. The wings included in the packaging can be attached to the housing to improve the grip of the plugs in the ear. This has the advantage that the case can be quite small and each buyer can adjust the fit individually. The earbuds respond to touch to control playback, but this worked a little sluggishly here. I also often made incorrect entries when I used the in-ear headphones with sweaty hands. This was then interpreted as a long press. I have to say that both the long press and the sensitivity of the touch surfaces can be configured in the Sennheiser app.
What distinguishes the MOMENTUM Sport from other in-ears are the heart rate and body temperature sensors in the housing. The measured heart rate was always pretty comparable to that of my Apple Watch or my WHOOP. The results were even verified by Cosinus GmbH at the Technical University of Munich, which specializes in measuring vital parameters in the ear. In addition, the sensors were developed together with Polar.
Battery life
According to Sennheiser, the battery life is a total of 24 hours, although you only have to charge the in-ears again after five and a half hours. In reality, that's just about possible, although I find it a bit of a shame that the battery is empty again after less than six hours. This is rather impractical for longer activities.
The MOMENTUM Sport can be charged in one and a half hours, and after a charging time of 10 minutes you can use it for 45 minutes.
sound quality
The drivers in the MOMENTUM Sport are 10 millimeters in size. The codecs SBC, AAC, aptX and aptX adaptive are supported, there is Bluetooth 5.2 for data transmission and ANC is also integrated.
The sound that the MOMENTUM Sport produces is solid, but not quite perfect. The clarity of the sound disappears somewhat in the high tones and vocals. The bass is very present, which in my opinion is good for sports, as a lot of bass has a driving effect. However, I would prefer something different for everyday use.
The noise cancellation blocks out the outside world well, but not perfectly, which I prefer, especially when doing sports. What is annoying, however, is that you can hear the wind very strongly. There is an anti-wind mode, which makes the whole thing better but also reduces the intensity of the ANC. The transparency mode only allows the surrounding area to pass through very weakly, which is why I preferred to simply take the MOMENTUM Sport out of my ear for conversations.
App connection
In the Smart Control app from Sennheiser you can make settings on the headphones and install firmware updates. The app is available to download free of charge from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.
The app itself is unchanged compared to my last tests. That's why I won't go into the basic functionality in more detail here. For the MOMENTUM Sport, however, Sennheiser introduced an area for viewing the current heart rate and current body temperature.
What's also new is the ability to connect the headphones to Polar Flow. This enables additional analysis of the data collected by the in-ears during a workout. The MOMENTUM Sport can also be connected to Apple Health, Garmin Connect, and Strava, whereby Strava and Apple Health can also easily use the data from Polar Flow.
