In addition to Asus Samsung has now also presented a new smartwatch. The successor Gear S3 does not rely on Android Wear, but on its own operating system called Tizen. There is also a rotatable ring with which the wearable can be operated in addition to the button.

Samsung's smartwatches have always been a bestseller. Now this year we want to make the wearable even better with the successor. The battery has grown, there is more memory, and the clock has gotten bigger. The best: the wearable is even waterproof, has a rotating bezel and is available in two different models.

"Frontier" - new version for outdoor fans

In addition to the classic version, a new version for frequent athletes was presented. The outdoor version called “Frontier” is intended to give the wearer the feeling of an outdoor smartwatch and uses a plastic strap. The “Classic” model, on the other hand, looks like a luxury wearable with the accompanying leather strap. The classic version comes with a silver housing color, the new Frontier version with a metallic gray housing. There are no technical differences between the two versions, only the outdoor version is a little heavier at 62 grams than the “Classic” version at 57 grams, but is still quite light. The display size of 1,3 inches and the IP-68 water resistance are identical in both versions. This means that 30 minutes up to a meter depth are possible.

Technical specs

Like the predecessor Gear S2, the Gear S3 uses a Super AMOLED display with 360×360 pixels. The display is protected by Gorilla Glass. At the heart of the watch is an Exynos 7270 dual-coreProprocessor that clocks at 1.0 Ghz. Samsung now relies on 768 MB of RAM for the successor instead of 512 megabytes. With 4GB of internal memory, there is enough space for music and apps for a smartwatch. The battery capacity is now 380mAH, the predecessor relied on 250mAH. As a result, the battery should last a full four days if it is not used excessively. In addition to the technical details, GPS, barometer, altimeter, NFC for Samsung Pay and speed indicator are also installed.

According to Samsung, there are currently around 10.000 apps for Tizen smartwatches. Unfortunately, iOS users do not have the option of using the wearable, as Samsung's software currently only supports Android smartphones. Compared to the Gear S2, there are a few great features: the bezel can now be used to accept and reject calls. To do this, the wheel simply has to be turned to the right or left. In addition, the display of the Gear S3 is now always on, also known as the always-on display. In addition, according to Samsung, the watch faces are now displayed with more colors and in greater detail.

Price and availability

Information on prices was not given at the press conference. However, it is known that both models will be launched this year. It is believed that the smartwatches should cost between 399 and 450 euros.

Unfortunately some incorrect information:
Watch must not be used while showering or under moving water, because it is waterproof.
There are differences: Frontier with LTE module and A-GPS
Bad research!
